Hearts Fall to Green Wave, Area Volleyball Roundup

MATTOON -- Effingham High School fell to Mattoon in Apollo Conference volleyball competition Thursday.

The Green Wave won 25-14, 25-11. EHS drops to 3-4 in the conference, 4-15 overall.

Katilyn Baker led EHS in kills with four. Aly Armstrong had five assists. Victoria Garren was the digs leader with 12.

In junior varsity play, the Hearts won 25-18, 21-25, 26-24 to improve to 8-5. The Hearts won the freshman/sophomore match by giving up less points. EHS lost the opener 25-22 but came back to win 25-18 and improve to 8-6.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a loss. CHBC won the opener 25-14 but T-town came back with 25-13, 25-21 wins to improve to 13-10.

Jolene Bueker had seven digs for the Shoes while Savannah Grimes led in kills with eight. Jessica Drees had 12 assists and Macy Michels had six blocks. Grimes and Jessica Drees had nine points each.

Leading CHBC were Felicia Johnson with five aces, Sarah Kirchhofer and Haley Atchley with five kills each, Skylar Morrison with nine assists and Atchley and Emma Wehrle with nine digs each.

"Senior Night has a lot of distractions," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "Fortunately the varsity was able to get their act together and pull out a "W". We had 21 hitting errors for the match, a season high."

T-town also claimed the junior varsity contest, 25-20, 25-22.

South Central picked up a victory over Odin in two sets, 25-4, 25-8. The Cougars are now 19-6 on the season.

Rachel Bray led the winners in points with 20 and aces with five. She also added seven assists. Hannah Rubin, Emily Chapman and Sidney Wilkins had four kills each. Kacie Crain led in digs with 10.

At Patoka

North Clay (Louisville) handed Patoka a loss in three sets. Patoka won the opener 25-20 but the Cardinals rallied for a 27-25 victory in the second set and won the match 25-19.

Mackenzie Rinehart had nine digs, four aces and a block. Taylor Jones led in blocks with six.

North Clay also won the junior varsity match 25-16, 25-7.

St. Elmo/Brownstown opened with a 25-23 victory over Mulberry Grove then came back with a 25-9 win for the match.

Brandi Howard led SEB with eight kills and eight points while Marlee Nolen led in digs with seven.

Newton High School pushed its record to 23-2 on the season with a victory over Marshall.

The Eagles won 25-14, 25-23. Frohning led in kills with eight and aces with four while Hartrich had 17 assists. Hardiek led in blocks with 10.

Netwon also claimed the junior varsity contest 25-21, 25-18.
