Hearts, Bulldogs Claim Volleyball Wins, Area Scores

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School claimed a victory over Charleston in Apollo Conference volleyball action Thursday, 25-13, 28-26.

The Hearts were led by Victoria Garren and Kaitlyn Baker with 10 digs each. Baker added six kills. Sidney Webster and Aly Armstrong had five assists each. Hannah Pike and Webster had three aces each.

The Hearts are now 1-0 in the conference, 2-7 overall.

EHS won the junior varsity match 25-9, 25-10 to improve to 4-3. Charleston nabbed the freshman/sophomore match 26-24, 25-21. EHS drops to 1-2.

At Marshall

Effingham St. Anthony tallied a non-conference victory over Marshall Thursday.

The Bulldogs won the opener 25-23 before Marshall came back with a 25-19 count. The Bulldogs then went out at 25-23 for the match win.

Taylor Dammerman led in digs with 14. Marci Mills had eight kills. Jenna Woltman finished with 20 assists. Woltman and Meg Richards had two aces each.

In junior varsity play, Marshall was a winner 25-19, 24-26, 25-18.

At St. Elmo

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg kept its National Trail Conference record intact with a 25-19, 25-13 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown. The Hatchets are now 3-0 in the conference, 8-3 overall.

"Mikaya Haddock had a good night getting all of her kills in the second set," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Megan Schlechte also played the net well using the overpasses to attack. Controlling our side of the net is a goal of ours that we need to focus on a bit more. We are looking forward to Monday's match."

Becca Schlechte led in assists with 19 for the winners. Megan Schlechte tallied 12 kills. B. Schlechte and Mackenzi Tabbert had 11 digs each.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Brandi Howard with three kills, two blocked shots and three points and Tessa Philpot with 10 digs.

In junior varsity play, St. Elmo/Brownstown was a winner 25-20, 17-25, 27-25. SEB also claimed the freshman/sophomore match 25-13, 25-23.

Dieterich put together a 25-21, 25-20 win over Martinsville to improve to 4-4 on the season.

Allyssa Boerngen tallied 10 digs for the Movin' Maroons. Aly Lane had three aces. Sydnie Vahling led in kills with eight. Hannah Hunzinger had eight assists.

In the junior varsity match, Martinsville won 25-9, 25-12. Dieterich drops to 0-8.

Newton continues to add to its victory list by downing Casey-Westfield 25-10, 25-20 in Thursday action.

Bergbower tallied 13 kills for the winners while Hartrich had 29 assists. Hardiek had 13 digs. The Eagles improve to 13-0 on the season.

In junior varsity play, Newton was a winner 28-26, 25-9.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) lost the opener to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 25-15 but came back strong to pull out 25-21, 25-22 wins for the match.

"The girls played with a lot of heart tonight and it showed," said North Clay Coach Kaylee McCollum. "The girls hustled for every ball. I'm very proud of their performance tonight."

The Cardinals were led by Taylor Jones with three kills and four digs and Darcy Fender with six blocks.

CHBC was led by Emma Wehrle with six aces and 10 digs, Kara Clearwater with nine kills and Skylar Morrison with 12 digs and 12 assists. Sarah Kirchhofer and Felicia Johnson had two blocks each.

 North Clay also nabbed the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-17.

The Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis captured a 26-24, 25-18 win over Neoga.

Jolene Bueker had six kills for the Shoes. Jessica Drees had seven assists. Savannah Grimes led in digs with five. Leah Jansen had three blocks. Macy Michels also had six kills and led in points with eight. The  Shoes are now 8-4.

Teutopolis also nabbed the junior varsity match 25-16, 25-20 to improve to 7-0.
