Effingham St. Anthony handed Teutopolis a varsity volleyball loss Thursday evening, 25-14, 25-12.

Megan Nuxoll had seven kills for the winners, led in digs with 12 and had one ace. Haylee Mathis tallied four blocks and 15 assists. Lauren Schmidt had one ace.

Leading Teutopolis were Morgan Breer with seven digs, Katelyn Ruholl with nine assists and Natalie Summers with three kills.

In junior varsity play, Teutopolis was the winner 25-10, 25-11. In freshmen action, St. Anthony won 25-11, 25-13, 25-13.

At Mattoon

It took three games but Effingham pulled out a victory over Mattoon in Apollo Conference play.

The Hearts lost the opener 25-13 but came back with close 25-23, 25-23 victories to pull out the match. Stephanie Robb led in kills with five and had six blocks. Kourtney Utz had six assists while Felicia Totten also had six assists. Kallie Koester had 13 digs while Deedra Myers had 12.

In junior varsity play,  Effingham fell to Mattoon 25-22, 25-18. The Hearts lost a freshman contest 25-21, 25-22.

Newton claimed a 25-10, 25-9 victory over Hutsonville/Palestine. Andrea Cartright had three aces and five digs for the Eagles. Keidrah Hardiek led in kills with seven while Megan Jansen led in assists with 11. Morgan Swingler contributed three aces.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo picked up a victory over Mulberry Grove in two games, 25-6, 25-4.

Feezel led in kills with 10 and had one block. M. Maxey had 12 aces, Manley had 11 assists and Moore had six digs. The Eagles improve to 6-1 in the Egyptian Illini Conference, 18-6 overall.

At Brownstown

South Central came calling at Brownstown and picked up a hard-fought victory in three games.

South Central won the opener 30-28 before Brownstown came back with a 25-23 victory. The Cougars then pulled out the win 15-13. Lincoln Brasel and Kallie Garrett had 10 kills each for the winners. Brasel also had five aces, two blocks and 17 assists.

Brownstown was led by Tara Johnson with six kills, Courtney Howard with five blocks, Michaela Walk with 11 assists and Brittany Kistler with 11 digs.

South Central improves to 19-5 while Brownstown drops to 6-14. The Cougars also claimed the junior varsity contest 25-11, 26-24.

At Marshall

Cumberland went three games to beat Marshall in Little Illini Conference play. The Pirates lost the opener 25-18 but came back with 25-12, 26-24 victories.

"Overall it was a really solid effort by the varsity squad tonight," said Coach Talia Moore. "We're building momentum from game to game and that's what you want to be doing this time of year. Going into the close of the season and the start of post-season, the girls are focused and determined. I think our best voleyball is yet to come."

Marshall won the junior varsity match, 25-16, 25-11.
