Newton, Clay City To Play For Volleyball Sectional Championships Tonight

Newton High School and Clay City High School will be competing for sectional volleyball championships tonight. The winners will advance to super-sectional play Saturday.

Newton will be competing for the Class 2A Shelbyville Sectional title at 7 p.m. The Eagles defeated Pana 25-19, 21-25, 25-17 to advance to the title match. Newton is 30-7 on the season.

The Eagles will square off against Shelbyville who beat Piasa Southwestern 25-11, 18-25, 25-12 to advance. The Rams are now 35-3.

The winner will head to the Fairfield Super-Sectional Saturday to face the Nashville Sectional winner, either Anna-Jonesboro or Belleville Althoff Catholic, at 1 p.m.

Clay City will compete in the Class 1A St. Elmo/Brownstown Sectional tonight. The Wolves picked up a three-set victory over Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 to reach the championship.

The Wolves set a school record for wins and stand at 28-2 on the season.

Clay City will take on Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 7 p.m. Christ Our Rock Lutheran beat Cisne 25-15, 21-25, 25-20.

The winner will then advance to the Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Super-Sectiohnal Saturday and face the Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Sectional winner, either Christopher or Valmeyer, at 2 p.m.
