EHS Wins In Conference, WSS Beats St. A, Area Volleyball Roundup

Effingham moved its Apollo Conference record to 5-1 on the season by downing Charleston in volleyball competition Tuesday.
The Hearts won 25-18, 25-14 and stand at 10-9 overall. Chandler Ramey tallied eight kills and 12 digs, along with two aces. Sidney Webster had 13 assists. Hannah Pike led in blocks with three.
Effingham won the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-17 and stand at 8-4. In freshman/sophomore play, Charleston was a 25-23, 25-23 winner. EHS drops to 8-2-1.

At St. Anthony
Effingham St. Anthony claimed the first win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 25-23 in National Trail Conference action but the Hatchets came roaring back with 25-21, 25-17 counts for the victory.
"We didn't play near as strong tonight as we are capable of," said WSS Coach Rhonda Schlechte. "We played scared and we weren't aggressive for some reason. We really struggled with getting around the block. I'm sure the NTC Tournament will be intense. We came back in game three and worked our game better. Tonight was just a big game and the girls let it get to them. We were able to put down some nice hits and used the block at times. We just need to keep improving."
Megan Schlechte led the winners in kills with 13. The ace leadership role went to Kenzi Tabbert who had five. Tabbert also led in assists with 15. Carson Cole tallied 13 digs. Autumn Bennett had two solo blocks and 12 kills. The Hatchets remain unbeaten at 7-0 in the conference and stand at 13-4 overall.
The Bulldogs were led by Taylor Dammerman in digs with eight, Isabel Moore in assists with 19 and blocks with five, Marci Mills in kills with eight and Jenna Wotlman in aces with three.
WSS also claimed the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-16 to improve to 11-1. The freshman/sophomore contest was a split decision as St. Anthony won 26-24 and WSS won 25-23.

Newton fell to Flora in two games, 25-23, 25-23. The Eagles drop to 19-5 on the season.
Newton was led by Frohning with seven kills, Hartrich with 20 assists and Kline with 11 digs and two blocks.

Kendall Burleyson led with 13 points, six aces and 10 assists while teammate Abbey Garrett added 12 points and three aces. Emily Chapman led in kills with seven.
The Cougars also claimed the junior varsity match 25-7, 25-13 to improve to 8-3. Senior Night will be Thursday hosting Odin.

Cumberland fell to Tri-County in the Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Tournament, 25-28, 25-18 Tuesday.
That drops the Pirates into the third place match at 6 p.m. Thursday. Leading the Pirates were Myers with three kills, Jackson with nine assists and three kills and Guyon with 15 digs and two aces.
Tri-County advances to the championship match Thursday.
