Shelbyville Wins St. A VB Tourney, Newton Second; Area Roundup

Shelbyville High School captured the championship of the Effingham St. Anthony Volleyball Invitational Saturday.

In Pool A action, Newton beat Teutopolis, 25-14, 25-15; Pana won over Kansas Tri-County, 25-13, 25-16; Newton downed Tri-County, 25-12, 25-14; Pana beat T-town, 25-18, 25-19; Newton won over Pana 25-15, 11-25, 17-15 and Teutopolis defeated Tri-County, 25-17, 25-11.

In Pool B, St. Anthony defeated Sullivan 20-25, 25-21, 17-15; Shelbyville downed Olney, 25-22, 25-12; Shelbyville  won over St. Anthony 25-23, 22-25, 15-3; Olney beat Sullivan 25-21, 25-15; St. Anthony picked up a victory over Olney, 18-25, 25-21, 15-11 and Shelbyville claimed a win over Sullivan, 25-15, 25-13.

In bracket play, Newton beat St. Anthony 25-9, 25-21 and Shelbyville downed Pana 25-18, 25-16.

The seventh-place match went to Tri-County over Sullivan, 25-15, 22-25, 15-5. Teutopolis won the fifth place match 28-26, 25-19 over Olney. Pana claimed third place over St. Anthony 25-18, 25-21. Shelbyville then beat Newton for the title 25-23, 25-18.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Ryann Ambrose (Shelbyville), Jenna Woltman (St. Anthony), Courtney Weddle (Pana), Blake Nohren (Olney), Maddie Halland (Shelbyville), Claudia Watson (Shelbyville), Lexie Siegart (Pana), Alli Kline (Newton), Grace Hartrich (Newton) and Kayla Kroeger (Teutopolis).

At Salem

The Teutopolis freshmen competed in the Salem Invitational Saturday. T-town split with Sandoval, 26-24, 24-26; with Nashville 25-20, 21-25; with Mount Vernon 24-26, 26-24; defeated Centralia 25-22, 25-22 and Nashville 15-25, 25-23, 15-9.

T-town claimed the championship.

 

At Flora

Dieterich competed in the Flora Tournament. The Movin' Maroons beat North Clay 32-30, 25-14 then lost to Clay City 26-24, 25-21.

Dieterich lost to Flora 25-23, 25-8 and Cisne 25-19, 25-12. The Maroons fell to Harrisburg 25-8, 26-24.

At Vandalia

South Central captured the championship of the Vandalia Touirnament Saturday and stands at 14-1 on the season.

The Cougars beat Vandalia 21-25, 25-20, 15-9 then won over Lebanon 30-28, 25-10. South Central defeated East Alton/Wood River 25-17, 18-25, 15-10 and that put the Cougars in the title contest. South Central then defeated Carlyle 25-22, 25-20 to win the championship.

At Mount Pulaski

Effingham competed in the Mount Pulaski Tournament. The Hearts picked up one victory and suffered four losses.

Burlington defeated Effingham 25-19, 25-10. The Hearts lost to Mount Pulaski 25-14, 25-20. Effingham lost to Fulton 25-12, 17-25, 25-15. The Hearts then beat Lena-Winslow 26-24, 28-26. Champaign  St. Thomas More then downed Effingham 25-23, 25-20.

The Hearts now have a 6-8 record.

At Windsor

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed the championship of its own freshman/sophomore tournament Saturday.

WSS defeated Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 25-18, 25-23 then won over Arcola 25-17, 24-26, 15-8. That put them into the championship match against Neoga where the Hatchets won 25-9, 25-14.

Ramsey won over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 25-13, 19-25, 15-9. Neoga downed Ramsey 25-11, 25-16. ALAH defeated Arcola 25-15, 25-17. Neoga then downed CHBC 25-9, 25-11.
