Effingham Captures Win, Area Volleyball Roundup

 Effingham High School opened Apollo Conference volleyball play Thursday evening with a 25-18, 25-20 win over Charleston.

The Hearts were led by Chandler Ramey with eight kills, Sidney Webster with eight assists, Shelby Nunamaker with two aces and three blocks and Jennifer Fred with seven digs.

EHS improves to 1-0 in the conference, 5-4 overall and will be competing in the Mount Pulaski Tournament today.

In junior varsity play, Effingham was a 25-15, 25-17 winner to improve to 5-2. In a freshman/sophomore contest, Charleston won 14-25, 25-22, 18-16. EHS drops to 3-1.

At St. Elmo

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg downed St. Elmo/Brownstown in National Trail Conference play, 25-12, 25-19 to remain unbeaten in the conference. The Hatchets are now 3-0 and 8-3 overall.

Maria Gentry and Kanzi Tabbert had two aces each for the winners. Autumn Bennett led in kills with nine while Jocelyn Schultz led in assists with 13. Megan Schlechte had 12 digs.

"The game we played tonight was much better," said WSS Coach Rhonda Schlechte. "The girls looked more confident despite a new rotation and positions. We are a good serving team when we can keep them in and with only three missed serves, it was a good night. Tabbert and Schultz took over setting duties and a did very nice job."

At Dieterich

South Central picked up a National Trail Conference win over Dieterich, 25-13, 25-19.

The Cougars were led by Kacie Crain with 10 points and four aces, Emily Chapman with 10 assists and Deidra Schaal with seven kills. South Central is now 4-0 in the conference, 10-1 overall.

Dieterich was led by Sydnie Vahling with five kills, Lauren Garbe with three blocks, Mikayla Winters with six digs and Hannah Hunzinger with seven assists. The Maroons drop to 4-4.

South Central also claimed the junior varsity match 21-25, 25-22, 25-21 to improve to 6-1.

At Neoga

Teutopolis handed Neoga a loss 25-13, 25-23 to improve to 8-4 on the season. Jolene Bueker and Danielle Repking led in digs with seven each while Savannah Grimes had nine points and five aces. Kayla Kroeger and Macy Michels had six blocks each. Ashley Westjohn had six assists.

"The varsity ended their three-game losing streak with tonight's victory," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "Set No. 1 was a dominate effort. Our serving was really effective and our offense was very efficient."

T-town won the junior varsity match 25-14, 25-14. Neoga and T-town split in freshman play. T-town won 25-18 while Neoga won 25-18.

Newton lost the opener to Casey-Westfield 26-24 but came back with 25-10, 25-20 wins for the match.

Hartrich had four aces and 26 assists for the Eagles while Kline led in kills with 11. Pilman had nine digs. The Eagles are now 10-3 on the season.

In junior vasrity play, Newton won 25-20, 25-15.
