Effingham captured fourth place and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg fifth place in the Bronze Flight of the Crossroads Volleyball Classic during weekend action.

In Friday pool play, Effingham fell twice, to Belleville Althoff, 25-13, 22-25, 15-18 and Wheaton St. Francis, 25-9, 25-15 in Pool A.

In Pool F, McCracken County beat Windsor/Stew-Stras 25-22, 25-20. WSS then fell to Bloomington 25-17, 25-20.

That put both local teams in the Bronze Flight where Effingham beat Kansas Tri-County 25-14, 25-19 and lost to Mattoon 18-25, 25-22, 15-8. The Hearts then fell to Walter Payton 25-22, 25-15 in the third place match.

In Saturday play, Windsor/Stew-Stras lost to Illiana Christian 25-17, 25-21 before beating Breese Central 25-22, 25-18. In the fifth place match, Centennial won a hard-fought first set 34-32. WSS came back with a 25-21 victory and won the match 18-16.

"We had quite a few big plays this weekend," said WSS Coach Rhonda Schlechte. "We stayed with some big teams so of course I'm very pleased with the team. Friday we started off struggling with serves and hitting errors. I would love to see what we could have done without those errors.

"Saturday started slow but then ended with a big bang with a win over Breese Central and Champaign Centennial. The girls put up a huge fight to take these matches and they did it with some new faces and positions on the floor with Becca benched due to illness. Becca played Friday and only one set Saturday before she was out the rest of the day. Calla Roney and Jocelyn Schultz took over the setting duties to keep the team intact. Mikayla Haddock also saw the MH position to relieve Maria while she is getting her strength back. I'm just amazed on how well Calla came through for us. An actual setting roll is totally new to her and she held her own. Autumn and Megan did a great job with controlling the game. They are getting stronger and more confident as we play. Definitely a good start to our season."

Illiana Christian beat Mattoon for the Bronze Flight championship 18-25, 25-22, 15-8.

In the Silver Flight, Glenbard claimed first place by beating Edwardsville 25-18,25-17. Third place went to Chatard over McCracken 23-25, 25-20, 17-15.
