Newton Fourth At C-W Invite, Altamont Third At Own Tourney

CASEY -- Newton High School took fourth place at the Casey-Westfield Volleyball Tournament Saturday. The Eagles swept through pool play unbeaten.

Newton beat St. Anthony 25-14, 27-25 then downed Cisne 25-18, 25-23 before beating Fairfield 27-25, 25-19. In the Gold Flight, Newton lost to Harrisburg-Emden 25-16, 25-17 and Tolono Unity 25-17, 25-21 to finish fourth.

Newton's Grace Hartrich and Taylor Johnson were named to the All-Tournament team.

Teutopolis competed and defeated Heritage 25-9, 25-16 before beating Edwards County (Albion), 20-25, 25-22, 15-6. Mount Zion then won 25-17, 25-19 and the Wooden Shoes dropped into the Silver Flight.

T-town came back with a 29-25, 25-15, 17-15 win over St. Anthony then beat Fairfield 25-9, 28-26 to finish fourth in the Silver Flight.

St. Anthony also competed in the tournament but no statistics were reported.

At Altamont

Altamont hosted a tournament Saturday. The Indians beat Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 25-13, 25-13 then fell to Lincolnwood 25-9, 26-24. 

The Indians defeated Greenville 25-13, 25-23 then won over Nokomis 25-17, 22-25, 15-13 to finish in third place.

CHBC fell to Greenville 25-5, 25-5, lost to Lincolnwood 25-6, 25-21 and dropped the match against Vandalia 25-19, 25-12.

No other scores were reported on the tournament.

Effingham's junior varsity squad finished second at the Champaign Central Tournament, going 2-1 on the day.

Effingham beat Mahomet-Seymour, 19-25, 25-18, 15-12 then won over Champaign St. Thomas More, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14 before losing to Champaign Central 15-25, 25-21, 17-16.
