Cougars Down Bulldogs, Volleyball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony High School played host to South Central and the Cougars headed home with victories in both junior varsity and varsity volleyball action Thursday.
The Bulldogs opened with a 25-23 win in varsity play but South Central came back with a close 26-24 win and then claimed the match 25-19.
Hannah Rubin had 11 points, an ace and 8 digs for the winners. Deidre Schaal led in kills with 11. Emily Chapman had 11 assists.
The Bulldogs were led y Marci Mills with four aces and nine kills, Taylor Dammerman with 17 digs, Jenna Wortman with 12 assists, nine kills and 12 digs and Aly Esker with two blocks.
In junior varsity play, South Central was a winner 25-15, 18-25, 25-14.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City claimed a win over Dieterich. CHBC won in two games, 25-22, 25-18.
CHBC was led by Liz Reed with three aces; Leah Kelly with five kills and six digs and Skylar Morrison with four assists and six digs. Kelly and Kara Clearwater had one block each.
Dieterich was led by Mikayla Winters with six points, two aces and five kills; Faith Boerngen with two aces and five assists; Hannah Hunzinger with five assists and Lauren Garbe with three blocks.

At Salem
Teutopolis went three games but captured a victory over Salem Thursday.
The Wooden Shoes won the opener 25-14 but Salem came back to take the second game 25-14. T-town then went out at 25-22. Caitlyn Hoene had three blocks, three digs, nine of 12 hits, two kills, five of six serves, one ace and two points. Kayla Kroeger had eight blocks, two digs, 7 of 13 hits, three kills, 13 of 15 serves, three aces and 11 points. Savannah Grimes had three blocks, one dig, 13 of 15 serves, three aces, 11 points, 27 of 29 sets and four assists.
"Winning is nice even when it's ugly," said Coach Tim Mills. "We made plenty of mistakes but we made enough good plays to get our first win of the season. We won set one pretty easily but in sets two and three we really struggled to keep the ball in the court, lots of missed seves and hitting errors."
Salem won the junior varsity match 25-8, 25-18. Salem also claimed a freshman contest, 25-18, 25-23.

Carlyle came to town and picked up junior varsity and varsity wins Thursday over Altamont.
Carlyle won the varsity contest 25-10, 20-25, 25-14. Leading Altamont were Lily Laatsch with six kills, Hannah Paquette with eight assists and Audrey Winters with eight digs.
Carlyle was a winner in junior varsity play, 25-23, 25-20.
