Effingham High School edged Effingham St. Anthony in the Pink-Out Volleyball Match Tuesday evening. The game aired on 97.9 XFM.

The match was close throughout with Effingham coming out the winner 25-22, 25-22. Neither team took more than a four point lead throughout the contest. Effingham would lead then St. Anthony would rally and take the lead.

Haylee Mathis led Effingham in assists with 12 and Lauren Schmidt had two aces. Megan Nuxoll had seven kills and six digs. Kassy Dammerman led in digs with eight.

Effingham also claimed the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-10.

At Strasburg

Stewardson-Strasburg picked up a victory in its first match of the high school volleyball season Tuesday evening.

The Comets downed Dieterich 25-18, 25-13. Elizabeth Gratz led the squad in aces with seven and had three digs. Kelsie Walden picked up 13 assists. Mariah Tabbert had four kills.

"The team came out tonight and played hard," said Stew-Stras Coach Judy Wood. "I think they were excited to finally get to play a game after all the practices. I was worried about our passing but they came out and gave their all and did a nice job."

Dieterich dropped to 1-2 on the season. Shelby Wendling led in points with four, aces with two and assists with four. Candace Niemerg had five kills.

In junior varsity play, Dieterich was the winner 25-7, 25-6 to improve to 1-2.

At Teutopolis

Cowden-Herrick handed the host Wooden Shoes a loss in varsity play but the match went three games.

The Hornets won the opener 25-19. T-town came back with a 25-16 victory before Cowden-Herrick picked up the match win 25-19.

Leading T-town were Lucy Niemerg with seven kills and four digs, Katelyn Ruholl with nine assists and Michelle Schmidt with two blocks.

T-town won the junior varsity contest 20-25, 25-15, 25-18. T-town is back in action  Thursday at Windsor.

In play last Thursday, Salem beat T-town in varsity play 25-8, 25-14. In the junior varsity match, Salem won 25-23, 25-21. The Wildcats also claimed a freshman/sophomore contest 25-16, 25-11.

Beecher City won the opening game over Patoka 25-17 but Patoka came back with 25-19, 25-20 wins to pull out the match.

Beecher City was led by Kacie Hilt with nine aces and 11 assists, Taylor Danekas with seven digs and Kirsten Buzzard with six kills.
