EHS Claims Apollo Win, Bulldogs Defeat Vandalia

MOUNT ZION -- Effingham High School picked up an Apollo Conference volleyball victory Tuesday evening. The Hearts downed Mount Zion in the opening game 25-19. The Braves came back with a 27-25 victory sending the match into the final game where EHS took a 25-17 win.
Chandler Ramey led the Hearts in kills with 19. Felicia Totten was the leader in assists with 34. Jennifer Fred and Madelin Mitchell had seven digs each. At the net, Brittany Beals and Shelby Nunamaker led the Hearts in blocks with four each.
The Hearts are 5-3 in the conference, 10-10 overall.
EHS fell in junior varsity action, 25-10, 23-25, 25-9. In freshman play, Mount Zion was a 25-8, 25-11 winner. EHS took the third game 11-9.

Effingham St. Anthony won over Vandalia in a non-conference match Tuesday evening. (The scores of the match were submitted backwards to local media)
The Bulldogs lost the opening game 22-25 but came back with 25-18, 25-21 victories for the match win. Megan Nuxoll had 26 digs while Aly Esker had 28 assists. Nuxoll also led in kills with nine. Logan Braunecker picked up two blocks. Andrea Doedtman led the Bulldogs in aces with 20.
In the junior varsity match, Vandalia was the winner 25-18, 25-14.

Dieterich started off with a 25-22 National Trail Conference win over Neoga but the Indians fought back to take the second game 25-16 then took the match with a 25-22 count.
The Movin' Maroons were led by Hannah Hunzinger with 11 points and 26 assists. Mikayla Winters had 15 kills and four blocks.
Dieterich tallied a victory in junior varsity play, 25-21, 25-23. The two squads split freshman/sophomore games. Dieterich won 26-24 before Neoga took a 25-13 victory.

The Eagles of Beecher City celebrated on Senior Night with wins over Ramsey in Egyptian-Illini Conference play.
Beecher City won 25-19, 25-21 as Caitlin Sloan led in kills with seven, aces with three and digs with seven. Sarah Kirchhofer contributed 12 assists.
Ramsey won the junior varsity contest, 25-18, 25-22.

At Strasburg
Stewardson-Strasburg improved its overall record to 16-8 on the season with a non-conference win over Sullivan. The Comets claimed the victory 25-7, 25-20.
"Teamwork looked really good tonight," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Defense was much stronger along wtih communication. Becca Schlechte had a 10-point consecutive serving run to end game one. We started game two with a few more errors but recoverd nicely. Overall a good night after a tough couple of days."
Schlechte tallied nine kills, eight aces, six assists, three digs and a block assist to lead the Comets. Kendall Knop picked up nine digs.
In the junior varsity match, the contest went to Stew-Stras in two, 26-24, 25-16. The Comets are now 4-10.

South Central improved its overall record to 14-4 with a non-conference win over visiting Centralia.
The Cougars won the opener 25-16 before Centralia came back with a 25-19 count. The Cougars then went out 25-18. Maria Brasel was the kill leader with 11 and also led in assists with 14. Alexis Harpster tallied 12 points.
The junior varsity squad picked up a 25-18, 25-18 win. South Central lost in freshman/sophomore play.

South Central -- Brasel, 11 kills, 14 assists, 1 block, 11 points; Chapman, 9 kills, 13 assists; Schaal, 9 kills, 5 digs; Harpster, 12 points
At Louisville
North Clay (Louisville) fell to Woodlawn in varsity play, 25-13, 25-17. The junior varsity Cardinals were winners. Woodlawn won the opener 25-17 but North Clay came back with 25-20, 25-23 scores.
At Altamont
Teutopolis nabbed a National Trail Conference win over Altamont Tuesday evening. The Wooden Shoes won 25-19, 25-21.
Laatsch led Altamont in kills with four while Winters contributed seven digs. Paquette tallied seven assists. Laatsch and Miller had three stuff blocks each.
Altamont drops to 3-5 in the conference, 7-18 overall. The Indians won the junior vasrity match 27-25, 25-20 and took a preliminary match.

Cumberland won the opening game over Martinsville 25-19 but the Bluestreaks took the next two games, 25-16, 25-17 for the match win.
Maddie Woolen tallied 15 kills for the winners along with seven digs, three blocks, two assists and an ace.
Cumberland drops to 7-14 on the season while Martinsville improved to 16-4.
