St. A Wins, EHS Drops Match in Volleyball Action

Effingham St. Anthony won a hard-fought opener, then downed St. Elmo/Brownstown in two games in volleyball action Tuesday at the Enlow Center.

The Bulldogs won the opener 27-25 then came back with a 25-18 count. Megan Nuxoll had 15 digs and four aces for the Bulldogs while Jena Woltman led in assists with seven. Logan Braunecker tallied six kills. Andrea Doedtman led in blocks with three.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-17 and won a freshman/sophomore contest 25-16, 25-13.

At Effingham

Mattoon came calling and handed Effingham a varsity loss 25-14, 25-23. Chandler Ramey led the Hearts in kills with 10 while Felicia Totten had 16 assists. Madelin Mitchell led in digs with six.

In junior varsity action, Mattoon was a winner, 15-25, 25-16, 25-15. In a freshman match, the Green Wave was a winner 25-16, 25-21.

Dieterich played host to Windsor and the Blue Devils captured a 25-19, 25-18 victory. Dieteirch drops to 3-10 on the season.

Leading the Maroons were Hannah Hunzinger with five points, two aces and 10 assists. Lauren Garbe and Mallorie Vahling had three kills each. Katlyn Lane had nine digs.

In junior varsity play, Windsor won 24-26, 25-21, 25-22.

At Dieterich

At Strasburg

The match went three sets before Stewardson-Strasburg pulled out a National Trail Conference win over Neoga. Neoga won the opener 25-23 but the Comets tallied 25-20 and 25-7 wins for the match.

"The girls had to work really hard tonight for this win," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Consistency is a strength right now. Maria Gentry had a really nice job of serving with nine in a row. Becca Schlechte also gave us a good lead in set two but errors eventually got the best of us before we pulled ahead. The girls are playing the net very strongly but still struggling on defense a bit."

Kendall Knop and Schlechte led in aces with five each and kills with 11 each. Knop led in assists with 12 and digs with 16.

Neoga was a winner in the junior varsity match, 25-16, 25-21. Stew--Stras claimed the freshman/sophomore match 25-17, 25-16.

Altamont lost the opener to Cowden-Herrick 25-17 but regrouped and came back with 25-9, 25-16 National Trail Conference wins. Wharton had eight kills, six aces and a stuff block for the winners. K. Hoene had 11 assists while Winters led in digs with 12. The Indians are now 2-3 in the conference, 5-11 overall.

Altamont also nabbed the junior varsity match 25-20, 25-15.

Newton was a winner in two games, 25-15, 25-12. Koebele led in assists with 21 and aces with two. Litzelman had nine kills and two blocks. Kr. Hardiek had 10 digs. Newton is now 10-5 on the season.

The Eagles also won the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-12.
