CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School lost a close match in Apollo Conference volleyball action Thursday to host Charleston.

The Hearts won the opener 26-24. Charleston came back with a 25-21 win. Then the final match went to the Trojans 29-27.

Shelby Nunamaker led EHS in kills with 12 and digs with 18. Felicia Totten had 30 assists and 12 digs. Brittany Beals and Katie Roberts had two blocks each. Jennifer Fred led in aces with three.

Effingham was a winner in junior varsity play, 25-12, 24-26, 25-12. Charleston won the freshman contest 25-22, 25-19.

At Farina

South Central picked up a victory over Dieterich 25-18, 25-21. Dieterich drops to 2-4 on the season.

Dieterich was led by Hannah Hunzinger with eight points, Emilee Flach with two aces, five digs and two kills, Faith Boerngen with three assists, Mallorie Vahling with two kills and Mikayla Winters with three blocks.

The Cougars were led by Emiliy Chapman with 12 points, five aces and 10 assists and Maria Brasel with six kills. South Central is 3-2 in the National Trail Conference, 4-5 overall.

South Central won the junior varsity contest 25-19, 25-15 to improve to 3-2.

At Farina

At St. Elmo

Stewardson-Strasburg had to go three games before picking up a National Trail Conference win over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

SEB won the opener 25-23 before Stew-Stras came back with 25-13, 25-17 counts for the victory.

"We played better as the night progressed," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We had a very rough start. They didn't play near as well as they did Tuesday with T-town but they fought hard to come out on top. I thought we played the net well but we took it to a player instead of the floor. We are still trying to get comfortable with all the changes we've had lately."

Kendall Knop led in aces with three, kills with 17 and digs with 19. Becca Schlechte had 13 assists.

In junior varsity action, SEB was the winner 25-14, 25-23. In a freshman/sophomore contest, SEB won 25-11, 25-9.

At St. Elmo

Grayville came calling and captured both the varsity and junior varsity matches over North Clay (Louisville)

Grayville won the varsity match 25-21, 25-16. In junior varsity play, Grayville was a 25-20, 20-25, 27-25 winner.

 

At Beecher City

Cowden-Herrick picked up a National Trail Conference win over Beecher City, 25-21, 18-25, 25-13.

Liz Reed had seven aces for Beecher City. Caitlin Sloan led in kills with six. Destiny Hans had 23 digs. Sarah Kirchhofer had nine assists.

Cowden-Herrick won the junior varsity match 25-4, 25-13.

Newton won the junior varsity and varsity matches over Casey-Westfield.

The Eagles claimed the varsity contest 25-17, 25-22 to improve to 2-1 in the Little Illini Conference, 5-4 overall. Kline had seven kills and two blocks. Koebele led in assists with 18. Johnson led in digs with 11.

Newton won the junior varsity match 27-25, 25-13.
