EHS Beats Newton, St. A Drops Match, Volleyball Roundup

NEWTON -- Effingham High School lost the opening game 26-24 but came back with 25-17, 25-22 wins to beat Newton in volleyball action Thursday.

Chandler Ramey had 16 kills and 12 digs for the winners. Felicia Totten had 31 assists. The Hearts are now 1-1 on the season.

Newton claimed the junior varsity match 25-19, 18-25, 25-17. EHS drops to 1-1. The Eagles also won a junior varsity match 25-15, 25-16. EHS drops to 0-2.

At St. Anthony

Edwards County (Albion) came calling and clamed a victory over the homestanding Bulldogs. St. Anthony won the opener 28-26 but Edwards County took 25-23, 26-24 wins for the match.

At Marshall

Dieterich traveled to Marshall and fell to the homestanders 25-17, 25-16. The loss drops the Maroons to 0-3 on the season.

Lauren Garbe had six kills and three aces for Dieterich. Hannah Hunzinger had eight assists. Mikayla Winters, Faith Boerngen and Mallorie Vahling had three kills each.

At Farina

St. Elmo/Brownstown picked up a National Trail Conference win over South Central. SEB won 25-19, 25-23. South Central drops to 0-2 in the conference and overall.

Maria Brasel led the Cougars with 10 points, eight assists and three kills. Emily Chapman and Deidra Schaal had three kills each.

South Central won the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-23 to improve to 1-1. SEB won a freshman/sophomore contest 25-20, 25-23.

At Farina

South Central -- Brasel, 10 points, 8 assists, 3 kills; Chapman, 5 assists, 3 kills; Schaal, 3 points, 3 kills

At Strasburg

Stewardson-Strasburg remained unbeaten on the young season with a 25-12, 25-22 win over Cumberland. The Comets are 2-0.

Clara Kaufman led in aces with three. Kendall Knop had 10 kills and nine digs. Jansyn Howe had 18 assists.

In the junior varsity contest, Cumberland was a winner 25-20, 25-16.

Mulberry Grove picked up a victory over Beecher City 25-13, 25-17.

Leading the Eagles were Caitlin Sloan with four kills, Sarah Kirchhofer with six assists and Destiny Hans with six digs.

Mulberry Grove also claimed the junior varsity match 25-10, 24-26, 25-8.
