Newton's Cummins Takes Third At EIU Indoor Track Meet

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Eastern Illinois track and field opened the indoor portion of the 2014 season with a strong performance Saturday afternoon at the Illini Classic. The EIU men placed 3rd out of seven teams while the Panther women placed 5th in a ten team field. EIU hosts the John Craft Invite next Saturday at Lantz Indoor FieldHouse.
Jalisa Paramore the OVC Female Field Athlete of the Week continued her strong performances posting a pair of top three finishes to pace the EIU women. Paramore was second in the long jump with a distance of 18’5.25”. She was third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.76. Teammate Angelica Anyaogu was 7th in the long jump clearing 17’9.50”.
Newcomer Peter Geraghty led the Panther men with the lone first place finish as he won the pole vault out jumping teammate and All-American Mick Viken. Geraghty had a vault of 17’6.50” which ranks second on the EIU career list. Viken, the school record holder, was second with a vault of 17’2.75”.
The EIU women also had a strong showing in the pole vault despite no recorded mark by All-American Jade Riebold. Four EIU vaulters scored points led by Kirstie Wieber in third place with a mark of 11’11.75 which ranks sixth on the EIU career list. Lauralyn Rosenberger was fourth clearing 11’5.75”. Annemarie Reid and Sadie Lovett finished sixth and seventh. Reid cleared 11’5.75 while Lovett cleared 10’11.75”.
Calvin Edwards and Kendall Williams both posted second place finishes for the EIU men in their respective events. Edwards was second in the 200m dash with a time of 21.92. Williams was second in the long jump at 22’6.25”. Teammate Ethan Cane was third in the long jump at 22’5.25”.
Pablo Ramirez cracked the EIU career top ten with a fourth place finish the 3K race. Ramirez ran a time of 8:21.06 which ranks 10th on the EIU career charts.
Other point scorers for the EIU women included Maura Cummins (Newton H.S.) with a third place finish in the high jump at 5’7.25”. Kailey James with a fifth place finish in the high jump at 5’3.25”. Amina Jackson with a sixth place finish in the 600m with a time of 1:38.71. Ivy Handley with a ninth place finish in the 3K at 10:31.71 and Condia Smith with ninth place finish in the weight throw at 50’10”.
Other point scorers for the EIU men included Mike Hesslau with a fifth place finish in the mile at 4:12.27. Rashad Hulbert and Danny Trevor finished sixth and seventh in the 60m hurdles. Hulbert’s time was 8.48 with Trevor crossing at 8.54. Garrett Jensen was sixth in the weight throw at 49’1.75”. Jamal Robinson was eighth in the 60m dash at 7.10. Aquintas Williams was ninth in the 400m dash at 51.42.
