Altamont Wins Boys Track Sectional, Area Athletes Headed To Class 1A State Meet

NEWTON -- Altamont High School won the championship of the Class 1A Newton Boys Track Sectional Wednesday.

The Indians put together 105 points for the victory followed by Newton 103, Casey-Westfield 70, Cumberland 66, Vandalia 50, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 47, Effingham St. Anthony 43, Marshall 43, Flora 35, Brownstown/St. Elmo 29, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 24, Dieterich 20, Teutopolis 18, Neoga 15, Lawrenceville 10, Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville 8 and North Clay (Louisville) 5.

First and second place finishers advance along with any reaching State qualifying standards.

Altamont's Ben Roedl was a winner in three events. He won the high jump with a leap of 1.85 meters, claimed first in the long jump at 6.35 meters and won the triple jump at 13.20 meters to advance.

The 4x200 relay team of Dexter Sloan, Trent Tedrick, Garrett Schultz and Hayden Summers advanced with a second place finish in 1:33.81 minutes. Brock Wendling finished second to advance in the shot with a throw of 13.21 meters. Derrick Bauer will be competing in the discus after a second place finish with a throw of 42.97. Jacob Veteto will be competing in the pole vault after a second place finish in 4.00 meters.

Advancing for Cumberland was Reid Carlen in the 100 with a first place finish in 11.00 seconds and a second place finish in the 200 in 23.10 seconds. Logan Gerhardt advances in the 300 hurdles after a second place finish in 41.37 seconds.

The Pirates will also be represented by the 4x800 relay team of Riley Morgan, Cameron Roedl, Landon Finn and Kaleb Bierman that finished second in 8:25.73 minutes.

Newton's Luke Weber was a double event winner. He claimed the 800 in 1:59.65 minutes and won the 1600 in 4:36.81.

Newton's Parker Wolf won the 400 in 50.11 seconds. Evan Baltzell advanced in the 300 hurdles with a third place finish that reached the state qualifying standard of 42.37. He had a time of 42.22. The Eagles Wade Wickham won the pole vault at 4.00 meters.

The Eagles' 4x400 relay team of Jackson Sornberger, Weber, Matthew Haskett and Wolf took second in 3:36.37 minutes. The 4x800 relay team finished third in 8:29.92  but reached State by hitting the qualifying standard of 8:33.28. Members of the team are Sornberger, Brock Probst, Hayden Borgic and Tanner Whitaker.

Effingham St. Anthony's 4x800 relay team won with a time of 8:25.71 minutes. Members of the team are Elliott Frisbie, Isaac Fallert, Julius Ramos and Noah Flaig. Ramos finished third in the 1600 but reached the State qualifying standard. He finished in 4:38.36 while the State standard is 4:39.54. Calvin Sudkamp took second in the high jump at 1.80 meters.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City's Griffin Vaughn was second in the 3200 in 10:19.35 minutes. August Cosart took second in the 1600 in 4:37.49 minutes.

Dieterich's Kaden Einhorn won the 3200 in 10:11.86 minutes.

Brownstown'St. Elmo's Trenten Monnet won the shot with a throw of 14.21 meters and claimed the discus with a heave of 44.66 meters to advance.

Teutopolis' Brant Niebrugge finished third with a qualifying height of 3.70 meters in the pole vault to advance.
