Area Competitors Qualify For State At 1A Altamont Girls Track Sectional (Updated)

ALTAMONT -- Newton High School  won the Class 1A Altamont Girls Track Sectional with 140 points Wednesday and Thursday. The Eagles were followed by Teutopolis 104, Effingham St. Anthony 96,  Marshall 76, Altamont 43.5, Brownstown/St. Elmo 41, North Clay (Louisvile) 39, Vandalia 36, Casey-Westfield 31, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 21.5, Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville 17, Cumberland 12, Flora 10, Stewardson-Strasburg 9, Neoga 5, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 3 and Lawrenceville 2.

The first and second place finishers advance to the Class 1A State Track Meet Thursday, May 16 with Class 1A preliminaries. The finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium.

The long jump and triple jump were postponed from Wednesday and finished on Thursday.

Winning the triple jump was North Clay's Rayna Persinger with a leap of 5.44 meters. Second place went to Katelyn Shoemaker of Cumberland who finished in 4.92 meters. Those two advance to the State Meet.

In the long jump, six competitiors reached the qualifying standard of 10.18 meters. T-town's Ella Neihls won at 10.75 followed by Sydney Kinder of Newton 10.39, Kaela Neihls of Teutopolis at 10.34, Gracie Smithenry of Newton at 10.27, Katelyn Shoemaker of Cumberland at 10.24 and Ellie Miller of Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 10.20.

Teutopolis High School's Kaitlyn Vahling was a three event winner. She claimed the 100 in 12.29 seconds, the 200 in 25.80 seconds and the 400 in 1:00.25 minutes.

Effingham St. Anthony's Isabella Keller and Liv Hoene were double event winners. Keller claimed the 1600 in 4:55.43 minutes and won the 3200 in 10:16.02.

Hoene took the 100 hurdles in 17.39 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 48.98.

Also advancing for the Bulldogs were Aubrey Denning in the 800. Denning finished first in 2:14.17 minutes. She also advances in the 1600 with a third place finish in 5:23.16 but reached the state qualifying standard. Allision Geen won the pole vault with a height of 3.53 meters to advance.

The Bulldogs 4x400 relay team of Audrey LaSarge, Hoene, Keller and Denning finished third in 4:17.19 minutes. They qualified as the standard was 4:19.68.

Qualifying for the Newton Eagles were Gracie Smithenry who won the high jump at 1.55 meters and Makayla McVicar who took second in the 200 in 27.24 seconds,

The Eagles had two winning relay teams and took second in a third relay.

The 4x200 relay team won in 1:50.44 minutes. Team members were Alaina Kuhl, Elley Bennett, Morgan Schafer and Makayla McVicar. The 4x100 relay team took second in 52.52 seconds. Team members were Kuhl, Bennett, Schafer and McVicar.

Newton also won the 4x400 relay in 4:12.00 minutes. Team members were Camryn Martin, Bennett, Karasyn Martin and Sydney Kinder. The Eagles also claimed the 4x800 relay in 10:32.37 minutes. Members were K. Martin, Layna Marshall, C. Martin and Grace Schumacher.

K. Martin finished second in the pole vault at 3.23 meters while C. Martin took third but advanced by reaching the standard with a vault of 3.07.

T-town's Adrienne Koester finished second in the 800 meters to advance with a time of 2:28.34 minutes. The 4x100 relay team of Adi Davidson, Halle Bushue, Ella Neihls and Vahling won in 51.23 seconds.

Brownstown'St. Elmo's 4x200 relay team finished second in 1:52.30. Team members were  Katie Berner, Cordelia Lytle, Addie Sasse and  Presley Williams.

North Clay's Rayna Persinger advanced in the 400 with a second place finish in 1:00.88.
