Newton Wins Fairfield Girls Track Invitational Title

FAIRFIELD -- Newton High School claimed the championship of the Fairfield Girls Track Invitational Thursday.
The Eagles tallied 165 points to outdistance the field of 11 teams. Fairfield was second with 92 followed by Red HIll (Bridgeport) 62, Mount Carmel 57, Patoka 50, Carmi-White County 42, McLeansboro 22, Sesser-Valier 22, Johnston City 15, Webber Township (Bluford) 13 and Flora 10.
Newton captured first place in all four relay events. The 400 relay of Makayla McVicar, Elley Bennett, Laney Hemrich and Morgan Schafer won with a time of 53.21 seconds.
The 800 relay team of M. Schafer, Brooke Schafer, E. Bennett and McVicar were winners in 1:54.66 minutes. The 1600 relay team of E. Bennett, McVicar, Sydney Kinder and Hemrich won with a time of 4:25.19 minutes.
The 3200 relay team of Layna Marshall, Zoey Michl, Shay Bennett and Karasyn Martin were winners with a time of 11:49.18 minutes,
Three times in three events, the Eagles captured first and second. Hemrich won the 400 with a time of 1:02.23 mintues while Kinder was second in 1:03.45. Martin claimed the pole vault at 9 feet while teammate E. Bennett was second at 8-6. Kinder won the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 4 1/2 inches while Isabel Meinhart was second at 30-3.
The Eagles scored numerous times with second, third, fourth and fifth place finishes.
