Newton Wins Olney Boys Track Invitational

OLNEY -- Newton High School captured the championship of the Olney Boys Track Invitational Thursday.
The Eagles tallied 159 points followed by Robinson 123, Olney (Richland County) 106, Salem 94, Charleston 90, Mattoon 75.5, Altamont 74, Paris 15, Lawrenceville 14 and Teutopolis 13.5.
Newton had several first place finishes. Parker Wolf won the 400 in 50.88 seconds and took second in the 100 in 11.54.
Owen Mahaffey won the 800 in 2:02.95 minutes while teammate Luke Weber was second in 2:04.56.
Clay Bergbower took first in the 3200 in 10:36.26 minutes.
Evan Baltzell was first in the 110 hurdles in 17.11 seconds and second in the 300 hurdles in 43.68.
The Eagles won the varsity 1600 relay in 3:39.24 minutes. Members of the team were Wolf, Luke Weber, Luis Zavala and Hayden Borgic.
They also claimed the freshman/sophomore 1600 relay in 3:54.68 minutes. Members of the team wree Byron Ashley, Jackson Sornberger, Matthew Haskett and Borgic.
The varsity 3200 relay also went to Newton in 8:49.36 minutes. Members of the team were Mahaffey, Zavala, Weber and Sornberger.
Jacob Wickham took second in the discus at 45.11 meters and second in the shot at 14.83 meters.
Altamont's highest finish was a second for Ben Roedl in the high jump at 1.88 meters and a third in the triple jump at 11.86.
The freshman/sophomore 1600 relay team placed second in 3:55.52 minutes. Members of the team were Kamryn Wolfert, Jacob Johnson, Trent Tedrick and Dexter Sloan.
T-town's varsity 800 relay team finished fourth in 1:40.87 minutes. Team members were Anthony Roley, Jack Lin, Ethan Mette and Ivan Wernsing.
Ethan Mette captured a fifth place in the triple jump at 11.73 meters.
