Newton Wins Class 1A Boys Track Sectional, Area Tracksters Headed To State

NEWTON -- Newton High School claimed the championship of its own Class 1A Boys Track Sectional Wednesday.

The Eagles tallied 146 points to leave the rest of the field behind. Altamont followed with 67, Robinson 63, Effingham St. Anthony 59, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 58, Casey-Westfield 39, Cumberland 28, Oblong 22, Patoka 15, Marshall 13, Neoga 12, Vandalia 8, Teutopolis 7, Red HIll (Bridgeport) 6, Brownstown/St. Elmo 4, Lawrenceville 4, Dieterich 2 and Palestine 2.

First and second place competitors advance along with any reaching state qualifying standards.

Newton had five individual champions and three first place relay teams.

Parker Wolf captured the 100 with a time of 11.09 seconds. Evan Schafer was a winner in the 400 in 50.91 seconds. Owen Mahaffey claimed the 800 in 2:06.52 minutes. Nick Zwilling was a winner in the 1600 in 4:41.91 minutes.

In the field events, Newton's Jacob Wickham was a winner in the discus with a throw of 48.47 meters. 

In the relay events, the Eagles claimed three of four first place finishes. The team of Dalton Baltzell, Ben Meinhart, Wolf and Schafer were winners in the 400 relay in 43.68 seconds. The team of Mahaffey, Meinhart, Wolf and Schafer won the 1600 in 3:31.95 minutes. Newton also claimed the 3200 relay in 8:27.13. Team members were Mahaffey, Nick Shamhart, Luke Weber and Luis Zavala.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City's Jadon Robertson will be headed to state in four events, winning all of them in the sectional. He claimed the 110 hurdles in 14.49 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 39.09. In the field events, Robertson won the high jump at 2.00 meters and the long jump at 6.56. Daniel Lucas claimed the shot with a throw of 18.41 meters and took second in the discus at 46.87.

Altamont's Xander Moschenrose was a sectional champion in the 200 in 22.81 seconds. Moschenrose also was a member of the first place 800 relay team that won in 1:34.56 minutes. Other members included Logan Duncan, Devon Sloan and Noah Klimpel.

Area teams that will be represented at the Class 1A State Meet include Newton, Effingham St. Anthony, Altamont, Neoga and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City. The area qualifiers are as follows:

North Clay (Louisville) was the lone area team competing in this sectional.and scored five points.
