Newton Wins Class 1A Sectional Track Title

ALTAMONT -- Newton High School claimed the championship of the Class 1A Altamont Girls Sectional Track Meet Wednesday.

The Eagles tallied 131 points followed by Robinson 77, Marshall 68, Teutopolis 51, Effingham St. Anthony 47, Casey-Westfield 37, Altamont 31, Flora 24, Patoka 23, Brownstown/St. Elmo 19, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 17, Palestine/Hutsonville 14, Vandalia 13, Oblong 3 and Cumberland 2. North Clay competed but did not have a team score.

The top two finishers and any others reaching state qualifying standards advance to the Class 1A State Track Meet May 19-21 at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium in Charleston.

Newton won the 400 relay with a time of 52.34 seconds. Members of the winning team were Addyson O'Dell, Alaina Kuhl, Laney Hemrich and Makayla McVicar.

The Eagles also claimed the 1600 relay in 4:14.18 minutes. Running were Sydney Kinder, Karasyn Martin, Rylea Borgic and Hemrich.

Newton was second in the 800 relay in 1:52.95. Team members were O'Dell, Ella Radke, McVicar and Brooke Schafer.

The other win for Newton was Amber Russell in the shot with a throw of 10.53 meters.

Newton had seven second places finishes. Hemrich took second in the 400 in 1:00.69 while Borgic was third in the 800 with a qualifying time of 2:27.12. Borgic took second in the 100 hurdles in 17.06 and second in the 300 hurdles in 50.40. Smithenry took second in the high jump at 1.52 meters. O'Dell took second in the long jump at 4.55. Alexis Hetzer was second in the triple jump at 10.02.

Altamont's Grace Nelson claimed the 200 in 25.83 seconds, the 100 hurdles in 14.52 and the 300 hurdles in 43.80.

Effingham St. Anthony's Maggie Moeller won the triple jump with a leap of 10.14 meters.

T-town's Kaitlyn Vahling won the 100 in 12.58 seconds and the 400 in 1:00.02 minutes, and finished second in the 200 in 27.08.

Isabelle Hemmen claimed the pole vault for the Wooden Shoes with a vault of 3.52 meters. St. Anthony's Allison Geen was second at 3.25 and Anna Green fifth in 2.74 and, Newton's Camryn Martin fourth in 3.05.

Brownstown/St. Elmo's Addie McWhorter was a sectional champion taking the high jump at 1.57 meters.
