Newton Wins Little Illini Conference Meets

CASEY -- Newton High School won both the boys and girls Little Illini Conference Track Meets Wednesday at Casey-Westfield High School.

Newton claimed the girls meet with 130.5 points followed by Red Hill (Bridgeport) 114, Robinson 108, Marshall 67, Olney 38.5, Paris 30, Flora 28, Casey-Westfield 26 and Lawrenceville 6.

The Eagles had four first place finishes in the meet. Whitney Zumbahlen and Laney Hemrich were one-two in the 400 with times of 1:00.63 and 1:01.25 respectively.

Newton's Amber Russell and Brooke A. Schafer were also one-two in the shot with throws of 32 feet, 7 inches and 27 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Grace Smithenry won the high jump at 5 feet and Elley Bennett claimed the pole vault at 9 feet, 6 inches.

In the boys meet, Newton was the team champion with 113 points edging second place Olney with 111 followed by Robinson 92, Marshall 89, Flora 61, Casey-Westfield 54 and Paris 35.

Parker Wolf and Ben Meinhart took first and second in the 200 in 23.85 seconds and 23.98.

Evan Schafer was first in the 400 in 52.91 seconds while Wolf was second in 53.16.

Owen Mahaffey won the 800 in 2:09.99 minutes.

The Eagles were winners in the 400 relay in 45.18 seconds. Members of the team were Meinhart, Isaac Flowers, Evan Schafer and Wolf.

Jacob Wickham claimed the shot title with a throw of 46 feet, 8 inches.
