Mattoon Wins Own Invitational, EHS Second, St. A Ninth

MATTOON -- Mattoon High School claimed the championship of its own girls track invitational Wednesday.

The Green Wave scored 137 followed by Effingham 116, Charleston 74 1/2, Centralia 66, Mount Zion 45 1/2,  Salem 43, Pana 32, Tuscola 3 and Effingham St. Anthony 14. Mattoon had eight first place finishes while Charleston had five.

Effingham had two first place finishes but captured numerous seconds to place second. The Hearts won the 800 relay in 1:51.83 minutes and the 1600 relay in 4:19.56. Effingham's Avery Braunecker was second in the 100 and the 200. Shayna Phillips took second in the 400 while Bethany Donaldson had second in the 800 and Jenna Bingham second in the 1600. Jaclynn Steppe took second in the 300 hurdles.

The Hearts also had second in the 400 relay and the 3200 relay.

St. Anthony's Kassy Dammerman took first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.59 seconds.
