Newton Wins Own Girls Track Invitational

NEWTON -- Newton High School claimed its own girls track invitational Monday.
The Eagles tallied 146 points followed by Effingham 115.5, Mattoon 110.5, Effingham St. Anthony 51, Oblong 45, Palestine/Hutsonville 29, Brownstown/St. Elmo 17, Altamont 6, North Clay (Louisville) 6 and Neoga 5.
Newton had only three first place finishers but the bulk of their scoring came in the other five places. The Eagles took nine seconds, five thirds, two fourths, a fifth and two sixths.
Whitney Zumbahlen was a double event winner for Newton. Zumbahlen won the 400 in 1:01.33 minutes and captured the long jump at 15 feet, 9 1/2 inches. She also nabbed second in the 100 in 13.11 seconds and was on the third place 1600 relay team.
Newton was a winner in the 3200 relay in 12:22.52 minutes. Team members were Heidi Lindemann, Emily Probst, Kaitlyn Olmstead and Jaleena Hemrich. Laney Hemrich claimed two seconds and a third. Hemrich took second in the 200 in 27.38 and the 400 in 1:01.99 and was third in the 100 in 13.33.
Effingham claimed four first place finishes. The Hearts' 400 relay team of Rylea Hodge, Madison Pierce, Kayleigh Koester and Kiley Weaver won in 53.55 seconds. They also won the 1600 relay in 4:23.17 minutes. Team members were Koester, Hodge, Shelby Rieman and Kiley Weaver.
Rieman was the individual winner for the Hearts in the high jump at 4 feet, 11 3/4 inches. Hodge claimed the 300 hurdles in 55.66 seconds.
St. Anthony's Allison Geen was a winner in the pole vault at 9 feet.
Brownstown/St. Elmo's Sydney Stine claimed the discus with a throw of 100 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
