EHS, Area Athletes Advance From Boys Track Sectionals

RANTOUL -- Effingham High School will be well represented at the Class 2A State Boys Track Meet after team members advanced from the Rantoul Sectional Thursday.

Five Hearts advanced in the field events and one in a running event. Those in the field events included Terrence Hill, a senior, who finished second in the high jump at 6 feet, 3 inches and senior Kody Line who took fourth at 6-3.

Frank Schiederjon, a senior, finished third in the shot and made the qualifying standard with a throw of 50 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

Jacob Miller, a senior, will be participating in the triple jump. Miller took third with a qualifying standard of 42 feet, 9 inches.

Alec Morrissey, also a senior, will compete in the pole vault after going over at 13 feet, 6 inches.

Hill was the lone EHS entrant to advance in a running event. He finished second in the 100 with a time of 10.99 seconds.

The Hearts had two near misses as Matt Robinson missed qualifying in the shot by 2 1/2 inches and the 1600 relay team of Line, Hill, Kihne and Clayton Cramsey missed by .35.

Mahomet-Seymour won the sectional title with 75 points followed by Tolono Unity 74 1/2, Mount Zion 58, Effingham 54, Decatur MacArthur 51, Charleston 46, Rantoul 38, Mattoon 33 1/2, Urbana 30, Monticello 25, Paris 22, Clinton 22, Champaign Central 14, Decatur Eisenhower 10 and Taylorville 4.

The Class 2A State Meet is scheduled for Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26.

Class 1A Newton Sectional

Athletes from six area high schools advanced from the Class 1A Newton Track Sectional Thursday.

Robinson won the meet with 82 points followed by Palestine/Hutsonville 68, Newton 62, Casey-Westfield 56, Cumberland 50,  Neoga 49, Vandalia 47, Altamont 43, Teutopolis 38, Brownstown/St. Elmo 18, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 16, Marshall 14, Effingham St. Anthony 7, Lawernceville 6 and Flora 2.

Advancing in the 400 relay were Cumberland who won in 44.75 seconds and Newton second in 44.77. Newton claimed the 800 relay in 1:34.39 to advance. The Eagles also advance in the 1600 after taking second in 3:32.25.  Cumberland won in 3:32.24.

Neoga's Zack Gresens will advance in the long jump after winning with a leap of 20 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Two advanced in the pole vault. Tim Moore, a sophomore from Altamont, won with a vault of 14 feet, 2 inches and Jason Kowalski from Teutopolis who finished fourth with a qualifying vault of 13-2.

Three go in the high jump, Jace McWhorter from Brownstown/St. Elmo who won at 6 feet, 1 inch. Neoga's Tyson Magee finished second at 6-0 and T-town's Paul  Esker was fourth with a qualifying vault of 6-1.

Altamont's Nate Brown won two events, the shot with a throw of 50 feet and the discus at 159-10. Also in the discus, Joey Kingery of T-town took second at 154-6 and Jared Kollman fourth with a qualifying throw of 145-7.

Two of Neoga's triple jumpers advanced. Trevor Fletcher won at 40-5 1/2 while Zack Gresens was second at 39-5 3/4.

Ryan Yaw won the 100 in 11.19 seconds for Cumberland. Newton's Payton Doughty was second at 11.29.

In the 400, Cumberland's Myles Gerhardt won at 51.46. Neoga's Trevor Fletcher took first in the 200 in 23.02.

The Class 1A State Track Meet will be held Thursday, May 24 with preliminaries in field and running events beginning at 10 a.m. Qualifiers advance to the finals Saturday, May 26.

Class 1A Shelbyville Sectional

Shelbyville won it's own sectional with 92 points followed by Tuscola 81, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 73, Macon Meridian 53, Hume Shiloh 37, Arcola 36, Cerro Gordo 34, Moweaqua Central A&M 33, Sullivan 32, Pana 27, Niantic Sangamon Valley 27, Decatur St. Teresa 17, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 12 and Villa Grove 4.

Dylan Webster was the lone Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City team member to advance to State. He will be competing in the pole vault after going 13 feet, 2 inches to finish tied for third. The Class 1A State Meet will be held Thursday, May 24 with prelminaries and finals Saturday, May 26.
