Newton Wins Class 1A Altamont Boys Track Sectional

ALTAMONT -- Newton High School claimed the team championship of the Class 1A Altamont Boys Track Sectional Thursday.

The Eagles tallied 87.5 points followed by Vandalia 77, Palestine 72, Cumberland 61, Red HIll (Bridgeport) 60, Effingham St. Anthony 44, Casey-Westfield 39, Altamont 24.5, Teutopolis 23, Marshall 19, Brownstown/St. Elmo 18, Lawrenceville 15, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 14, Flora 12 and North Clay (Louisville) 1.

Individuals and relay teams had to finish either first or second or reach state qualifying standards to advance to the Class 1A State Track Meet scheduled May 25-27 at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium.

Qualifying in the relays were the Newton (Mitch Bierman, Rhett Kocher, Hunter Gray, Joseph Stone) 400 relay team first in 44.69 and the Cumberland (Ryan Yaw, Tyson Magee, Myles Gerhardt, Howard Dillon) 400 relay team second in 44.75; the 800 relay of Newton (Mitch Bierman, Trenton Duncan, Hunter Gray, Rhett Kocher) second in 1:35.82 and the 1600 relay teams of Cumberland (Myles Gerhardt, Ryan Yaw, Cole Willenborg, Dillon Howard) first in 3:30.13 and Newton (Ben Carr, Keith King, Trenton Duncan, Joseph Stone) second in 3:33.13.

Five area pole vaulters will advance. Andrew McWhorter (Teutopolis) tied for third at 13-5 and Tim Moore (Altamont) at 12-11, Keegan Martin (Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City) at 12-5, Donavan Delaney (Altamont) at 12-5 and Dylan Webster (CHBC) at 12-5 all reaching the state qualifying standard.

Three advanced in the high jump and those were Tyson Magee (Cumberland) second at 6-5 and Keith King (Newton) at 6-1 and Nicholas Cartright (Newton) at 48-3 1/2 reaching the qualifying standard.

Sam Powell from Brownstown/St. Elmo will be participating in the triple jump after finishing second in 39-6.

Ty Kinkelaar (St. Anthony) and Nate Brown (Altamont) were 1-2 in the discus. Kinkelaar's distance was 165-6 and Brown 143-5.

Cumberland's Kort McClellan took first in the 3200 in 10:33.80.

Newton's Joseph Stone took first in the 800 in 2:02.83. Newton's Rhett Kocher was first in the 200 in 23.16.

Three area runners advanced in the 400 and those were Cumberland's Dillon Howard first in 50.21, St. Anthony's Jack Nuxoll second in 51.68 and Cumberland's Myles Gerhardt who finished third but had a state qualifying time of 51.78.

Altamont's Jesus Flores finished third in the 1600 with a state qualifying time of 4:37.78.
