Teutopolis Wins Class 1A Newton Track Sectional

NEWTON -- Teutopolis High School claimed the Class 1A Newton Track Sectional championship with 126.43 points followed by Newton 88.43, Effingham St. Anthony 77, Neoga 74, Casey-Westfield 57.43, Altamont 27, Cumberland 26.43, Brownstown/St. Elmo 18, Marshall 16.43, Oblong 16, Palestine 15.43, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 9, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 6 and Flora .43 in competition Thursday.

First and second place finishers along with any reaching state qualifying standards advance to the State Tournament next week.

The Wooden Shoes advance all four relay teams along with seven individuals. T-town won the 3200 relay in 10:12.43 minutes. Team members are Rebecca Habing, Morgan Mette, Savannah Grimes and Kara Weichman. The 400 relay team won in 52.91 seconds. Team members were Lanae Koester, Julia Hardiek, Cali Johnson and Nikki Wellbaum.

The 800 relay team won in 1:50.06 minutes. Team members were Koester, Johnson, Mette and Hardiek. The Shoes took second in the 1600 relay in 4:11.95. Members of the relay were Weichman, Habing, Grimes and Mette.

Individually, T-town's Nikki Wellbaum took second in the long jump at 15 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Micah McWhorter was second in the pole vault at 9 feet, 9 inches. Claire Bushur finished first in the shot with a throw of 40-10 and first in the discus at 119-10. Savannah Grimes took first in the triple jump at 33-1 1/2.

Lanae Koester and Julia Hardiek tied for second in the 200 with a time of 27.66.

St. Anthony has eight athletes advancing to state. Kristin Slaughter captured first in the pole vault at 11-7 and Katherine Slaughter finished third at 9-1. Kristin Slaughter will also be competing in the 400 after taking second on 1:01.56.

Anna Sophia Keller, the defending state champion in both events, took first in the 3200 in 10:26.76 and first in the 1600 in 5:00.19. Sarah Carr finished first in the 800 with a time of 2:25.40.

The 3200 relay team of Katherine Slaughter, Abby Weis, Kaitlin  Zeller and Carr finished second in 10:27.12. The 1600 relay team of Carr, Weis, Keller and Kristin Slaughter toko first in 4:11.20.

Newton has six advancing to state. The 1600 relay team of Tori Zumbahlen, Brooklyn Herman, Claire Carr and Abby Stone finished third in 4:14.59 but advanced due to meeting the state qualifying standard. the 800 relay team of Mikala Haarman, Emma Weber, Alex Haarman and Tori Zumbahlen finished second in 1:53.11.

The Eagles' Mallory Bergbower finished second in the high jump at 4-7. Weber took second in the triple jump at 31-7 1/2. Herman was second in the 100 in 13.40. Stone was second in the 800 in 2:26.72.

Neoga's 400 relay team of Zoe Meadows, Makenzi Hill, Abbi Kepp and Allison Kingery took second in 53.20. Emmalyn Walk took second in the 3200 in 12:42.39 and was second in the 1600 in 5:49.90. Hill captured the 100 hurdles in 16.80. Hill also advanced in the 300 hurdles with a second place finish in 50.49.

Altamont will be represented by Rachel Jackman in the high jump. Jackman won at 4 feet, 9 inches. Hanna Wolf finished second in the shot with a heave of 36-10.

St. Elmo/Brownstown's Claire Wilhour advanced int he 300 hurdles with a first place finish in 47.62 seconds.

Cumberland has a lone representative, Elise Hemmen, who finished fourth in the pole vault at 9-1 but reached state qualifying standards.
