Wooden Shoes Win Sam Bennett Track Invitational

ROBINSON --  Teutopolis High School captured the championship of the 21st Annual Sam Bennett Girls Track Invitatoinal Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes scored 112 points followed by Newton 91, Robinson 59, Neoga 51, Shelbyville 46.5, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 44, Olney 38, Benton 32, Cumberland 28, Brownstown/St. Elmo 23, Paris 15, Altamont 8, Palestine/Hutsonville 6.5, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 4 and Lawrenceville 0.

T-town captured three relay events, taking the 3200 in 10:20.27 with team members Rebecca Habing, Savannah Grimes, Morgan Mette and Kara Weichman. The Shoes won the 800 relay in 1:50.50 with Cali Johnson, Mette, Julia Hardiek and Lanae Koester. T-town then nabbed the 1600 relay in 4:14.03. Weichman, Mette, Habing and Grimes were the runners.

T-town also took second in the 400 relay in 51.47 behind Newton with 51.35. Newton team members were Alex Haarmann, Brooklyn Herman, Anby Stone and Claire Carr.

The Shoes also had four individual first place finishes. Weichman won the 400 in 1:02.06 minutes. Claire Bushur claimed the shot with a throw of 42 feet, 8 inches setting not only a new meet record but also a school record. Grimes won the triple jump at 33-9 1/2 and Micah McWhorter was a winner in the pole vault at 10 feet.

Besides the 400 relay victory, Newton also had two individual firsts, Stone in the 800 in 2:29.08 and Brooklyn Herman in the 100 at 12.80 seconds.

Jaelyn Robertson won the 100 hurdles in 16.12 seconds for Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and captured the long jump at 15 feet, 4 inches.

Claire Wilhour was a winner for Brownstown/St. Elmo in the 300 hurdles in 48.52 seconds.

At Urbana

Effingham finished fourth in the Urbana Boys Track Open Saturday.

Winning the meet was Mattoon with 150 points followed by Danville 124, Urbana 81, Effingham 78, Argo 71, Rantoul 58, Champaign Central 46, Decatur MacArthur 37 and Rich South 33.

Effingham's top finish was a second place by Terrance Hill in the long jump with a leap of 30 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Hill also took a third in the high jump at 6-0. He was sixth in the 100 in 11.43.

Another top EHS finish was Alec Morrissey taking a second place in the pole vault at 13 feet. Ash Blunt finished third in the shot with a throw of 46-2 while teammate Frank Schniederjon was fifth at 42-10.

Kody Line finished fourth in the long jump at 19-9 3/4 and fourth in the high jump at 5-10. Jacob Miller took fourth in the triple jump at 40-1 1/2. Jacob Donaldson was fifth in the 800 at 2:06.18.

The Hearts had two fourth place finishes in relays, taking fourth in the 800 in 1:36.67 and fourth in the 1600 in 3:48.20. They were fifth in the 400 relay in 46.01.
