Several Athletes Qualify For Girls State Track Finals

Several area athletes qualified for the finals Saturday at the Girls 1A State Track and Field Meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Senior McKendra Barthelme of Newton, who advanced to state in four events this year, qualified for the finals in all four events; in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 7-1/4 inches. the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, nine inches, the 100 meter high hurdles finals in 15.45, and the 300 meter low hurdles in 47.24. 

St. Anthony junior Kristin Slaughter qualified for the finals in the pole vault, going 10 feet, three inches.

Senior Anna Hartke of Teutopolis advanced to Saturday competition in the high jump, going five feet, three inches.

Junior Anna Sophia Keller of St. Anthony, the defending state champion, reached the finals in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:55.62. She will also compete in the 3200 meter run on Saturday along with Sarah Carr of Newton.

Area athletes who competed Thursday, but failed to reach the finals include Julia Hardiek of Teutopolis in the long jump with a jump of 14-11 1/4...Elise Hemmen of Cumberland in the pole vault at 9-6...Stacy Smithenry of Newton in the high jump at 4-11...Grace Hartrich of Newton in the shot put with a throw of 33-6 1/4...Courtney Hadra of Newton in the discus with a throw of 91-3...Teutopolis' 3200 meter relay team of Savannah Grimes, Shanna Niebrugge, Emma Repking and Kara Weichman who finished in 10:38.06...Teutopolis' 400 meter relay team of Julia Hardiek, Julia Greuel, Nikki Wellbaum and Morgan Mette who finished in 51.79...Makenzee Hill of Neoga in the 100 meter high hurdles had a time of 18.66...Alex Haarman of Newton in the 100 meter dash had a time of 13.52...Abby Weis of St. Anthony in the 800 meter run had a time of 2:23.83...Sarah Carr of Newton in the 800 meter run. who had a time of 2:27.78..Teutopolis' 800 meter relay team of Julia Hardiek, Julia Greuel, Anna Hartke and Morgan Mette which finished in 1:49.57...Taylor Johnson of Newton in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.25...Abby Weis of St. Anthony in the 1600 meter run in 5:35.18...St. Anthony's 1600 meter relay team of Sara Ragland, Abby Weis, Anna Sophia Keller and Kristin Slaughter which finished in 4:30.76...and Teutopolis' 1600 meter relay team of Kara Weichman, Savannah Grimes, Rebecca Habing and Morgan Mette which finished in 4:14.55.
