NAPERVILLE, Ill. –The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) recognized its Merle Chapman Leadership Award winners on April 12 during the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Spring Workshop.

The award, which began during the 2002-03 academic year, is named after the long time football coach/athletics director at Millikin University and the second commissioner of the CCIW. Chapman served in that capacity from 1997-2002.

This award identifies the student-athletes that best exemplify the traits that Chapman displayed and encouraged during his three-plus decades of service as teacher, coach and mentor to the athletes, coaches and administrators of the CCIW. Those traits are loyalty, enthusiasm, leadership, sportsmanship, and a commitment to academic, athletic and
personal excellence.

Millikin’s honorees for 2015-16 were seniors Jamie Michl (Newton, H.S.) and Taylor Sanders (Marshall, H.S.).  Michl is a true example of a student-athlete.  Michl has excelled in cross country and track and field while maintaining academic excellence in the classroom majoring in Elementary Education.  Michl was the 2015 CCIW Champion in the Outdoor 800 Meters and the 2016 Indoor 800 Meter CCIW Champion.  She has earned Academic All-Conference honors in track and field four times and three times in cross country.

Sanders has a near perfect grade point average majoring Information Systems.  Sanders was a three-year starting wide receiver in football and earned CCIW Academic All-Conference honors.  Sanders was twice selected as Millikin’s recipient of the conference’s Jack Swartz Award for the fall sport athletes.
