Five Area Athletes Have Best Times/Distances Headed to State Track Meet

Five area athletes have the best times or distances headed to the Class 1A State Track Meet Thursday, Friday and Saturday at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Stewardson-Strasburg's Jason Fry has two of those best distances. He holds the best throw in the shot at 52 feet, 8 1/2 inches. He also holds the best throw in the discus at 165 feet, 1 inch. Also competing in the discus will be Newton's Cody Riddle.

Altamont's Andrew Sharp holds the best time in the 400 at 49.56 seconds. Also taking part in the 400 will be Teutopolis' Kyle Blievernicht who has the eighth best time at 50.78.

Neoga High School's Corey Kersey holds the best leap in the triple jump at 47 feet, 1/4 inch. T-town's Cody Heuerman also will be competing. His best jump was 41-2.

Ty Sutherland, from Cumberland, has the best time in the 800 at 1:55.52 minutes. Also taking part in the 800 will be St. Anthony's Gardewine with the sixth best time at 1:58.40 and Newton's Joseph Stone with the 10th best time of 2:00.02.

T-town's Riley Drees has the fourth best time in the 300 hurdles at 40.49 seconds. The best time turned in was 39.99. T-town's 4x400 relay team of Nick Bierman, Justin Hunt, Riley Drees and Kyle Blievernicht has the fourth best time  at 3:28.47. The best time was turned in by Onedia ROWVA at 3:28.66. Cumberland is tied for ninth with a time of 3:29.09. Team members are Charles Ault, Dillon Howard, Tye Sutherland and Lawrence Shuey.

Other competitors at state will be:

Long Jump -- Corey Kersey (Neoga) with a seventh best leap of 21 feet, 6 1/2 inches and Justin Hunt (Teutopolis) has a 20-9 3/4 jump.

Pole Vault -- Monte Wolke (Cumberland), Brock Mammoser (Newton), Andrew McWhorter (Teutopolis) and Matthew Tolliver-Goode (Newton)

4x100 Relay -- Newton (Austin Angel, Mitch Bierman,Joseph Stone, Lucas Stone)

4x200 Relay -- Teutopolis (Justin Hunt, Nick Bierman, Ben Sudkamp, Cody Heuerman)

4x800 Relay -- Cumberland (Charles Ault, Ethan Kemper, Lawrence Shuey, Tye Sutherland)

110 Hurdles -- Jake Volk (Newton), Noah Blievernicht (Teutopolis)

200 -- Lucas Stone (Newton)

3200 -- Lucas Probst (Teutopolis)

In the Class 2A meet, Effingham High School sends three athletes to state. Marcus Robinson is tied for the fourth best leap in the high jump at 6 feet, 1 inch. The best is 6 feet, 7 inches.

Evan Boggs will be competing in the shot with a throw of 48 feet, 8 1/2 inches. The best has been 56-2.

Sean Zerrusen will be competing in the 800 with the fifth best time of 1:57.06. The best has been 1:55.75.

The Class 1A preliminaries will be held Thursday while the 2A and 3A preliminaries are set for Friday. The finals will be held Saturday.
