Four Junior High Track Athletes Claim Championships at State

Four area junior high school track athletes claimed state championships during the weekend at the Class A State Track Meet in Peoria.

In the seventh-grade girls meet, Effingham St. Anthony captured first in the 1600 relay with a time of 4:29.31 minutes.

Sigel St. Michael had two state champions. Micah McWhorter won the seventh-grade girls pole vault with a vault of 8 feet, 6 inches. In the same event in eighth-grade girls, Jolene Bueker was the winner at 8 feet, 9 inches.

Isaac Kramer, from Stewardson-Strasburg, won the eighth-grade boys state discus title with a throw of 146 feet, 4 inches. Kramer also took second place in the shot with a throw of 45 feet, 10 inches.

In other top 10 finishes, Cowden-Herrick's Keegan Martin finished third in the seventh-grade boys pole vault at 9 feet. Cowden-Herrick's Dylan Webster tied for seventh with St. Anthony's Will Fonner. Both went 7 feet, 9 inches. Altamont's Donovan Delaney was 10th at 7-9.

Cumberland's Kort McClellan took eighth in the seventh-grade boys 1600 in 5:18.10.

In eighth-grade boys action, Cumberland's Ryan Yaw was 10th in the 200 in 25.30 seconds. Mitchell Stevenson of Altamont finished fourth in the 110 hurdles in 16.66 seconds. Altamont's 800 relay team was ninth in 1:45.09 minutes. In the pole vault, Sigel St. Michael's Collin Kreke took fourth at 8 feet, 9 inches and Evan Althoff was fifth at 8-3.

In the seventh-grade girls meet, St. Anthony's Grace Hakman was second in the pole vault at 8 feet, 3 inches while teammate Katherine Slaughter took fourth at 7-6. Altamont's Maci Hanna was seventh at 6-9. Neoga's Allison Kingery was eighth in the 800 in 2:34.98 while Neoga's 800 relay team finished ninth in 2:01.27.

Altamont's Tinley Mette was sixth in the high jump at 4-6 while St. Michael's Sadie Bueker tied for 10th at 4-7. Effingham Sacred Heart's Natalie Carie finished in a tie for ninth in the long jump at 13-9. St. Anthony's Kaitlyn Kabbes was seventh in the shot at 27-10.

In eighth-grade girls competition, the area owned the pole vault pit as Bueker took first, St. Anthony's Claire Wortman was seventh at 7-6. Brook Stuckemeyer (Altamont), Claire Guyon (Cumberland) and Claire McHugh (St. Anthony) tied for 10th at 7-0.

Neoga's 400 relay team finished fifth in 54.24 seconds. Blair Banning of Neoga was fifth in the long jump at 15-8 3/4 while Stewardson-Strasburg's Whitney Smith finished 10th at 15-1 1/2. Altamont's Shelbi Stone finished tied for 10th in the high jump at 4-8 and Hanna Wolff was eighth in the discus with a throw of 81-1. St. Michael's Leah Jansen was 10th in the discus with a throw of 77-1.

Brownstown/St. Elmo's 400 relay team captured eighth place in 55.04 seconds.
