EHS Competes At Edwardsville, Newton Wins Robinson Invite

EDWARDSVILLE -- Effingham High School competed in the Winston Brown Boys Track Invitational Saturday and scored 13 points.

Sean Zerrusen broke a freshman/sophomore 800 record with a time of 2:00.18 and finished third. The old record was 2:02.

Kyle Niebrugge finished third in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches. He was going for a personal record at 6-6 and barely touched the bar and it came off.

Collin Hecht took eighth in the 300 low hurdles with a personal record time of 41.94 seconds.

Evan Boggs and Billy Arndt competed in the shot and discus but did not make the finals. Boggs had a throw of 134-8 in the discus and 43-5 1/2 in the shot. Arndt had a throw of 130-1 in the discus and 42-6 1/2 in the shot. Tyler Homman ran a 57.63 in the 400. Marcus Robinson did not make opening height in the high jump.

 

At Robinson

Newton captured the championship of the Robinson Invitational with 119.5 points followed by Robinson 117, Teutopolis 105, Fairfield 65, Olney 48, Mount Carmel 44, Altamont 36, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 24.5, Effingham St. Anthony 21, Cisne 20, Palestine 15, Paris 2 and Lawrenceville 2.

The Eagles claimed the 400 relay with a time of 44.79 seconds. Team members were Mitch Bierman, Luke Stone, Joseph Stone and Austin Angel. The Eagles also claimed the 800 relay with a time of 1:34.29 minutes. Members were Bierman, Zach Lewis, Matthew Tolliver-Goode and Angel.

St. Anthony's Andrew Gardewine won the 800 with a time of 2:00.91 minutes. Altamont's Andrew Sharp was a winner in the 400 in 49.99 seconds.

Teutopolis had several winners. Riley Drees took the 300 hurdles in 39.79. Justin Hunt won the long jump with a leap of 21-6. Andrew McWhorter captured the pole vault at 13-6. Cody Heuerman was a winner in the triple jump at 41-0.

The Wooden Shoes' 1600 relay won in 3:32.02. Team members were Nick Bierman, Heuerman, Drees and Kyle Blievernicht.

"We had two records fall tonight," said T-town Coach Connie Deters. "We set school records when Justin Hunt went 21 feet, 6 inches in the long jump. The old record was 21-4 by Jon Niebrugge. Riley Drees set a new record in the 300 hurdles in 39.79 seconds. The old record was 40.3 by Tim Huffman.

"There was great sportsmanship between the teams. Our team, Newton and Robinson teams all shook hands."
