Bulldogs, Shoes Advance Players To State Tennis Tournament

MOUNT ZION -- Effingham St. Anthony placed second at the Class 1A Mount Zion Tennis Sectional during the weekend.

Maroa-Forsyth was the team champion with 24 points followed by St. Anthony 22, Mount Zion 16, Hillsboro 10, Taylorville 10, Effingham 8, Lincoln 4, Shelbyville 4, Vandalia 4 and Decatur St. Teresa 0.

St. Anthony's Mia Kinkelaar and Ellie Link won the doubles title. The pair are both juniors. Teammates Liv Hoene, a junior, and Nora Trupiano, a sophomore, took fourth.

The top four singles players and top four doubles teams at sectional advance to State.

St. Anthony's Julia Schultz, a sophomore, will advance as a singles player after finishing fourth.

Maroa-Forysth's Ella Sandgren was the singles champion followed by Mount Zion's Paityn Koester and Maroa-Forsyth's Isabella Griffiths. Both advance.

In doubles, along with the St. Anthony pairs, Mount Zion's Gadiel Velasco and Caroline Huss took second and Alexis Hiles and Katherine Niles took third.

The qualifiers will advance to the State Final this Thursday through Saturday in the Arlington Heights area.

 

At Charleston

Teutopolis won the Class 1A Charleston Sectional during the weekend.

The Wooden Shoes scored 25 points followed by Flora 18, Olney, Richland County 14, Mattoon 14, Robinson 13, Casey-Westfield 10, Newton 4, Mount Carmel 4 and Charleston 0.

Advancing for the Shoes to State are Abbie Lee, a sophomore, in singles, Anna Probst and Adi Davidson, both juniors, in doubles and Ella Wermert, a senior, and Allie Ruholl, a junior, in doubles.

Others advancing were Elise Derome of Casey-Wesfield, Annie List of Robinson and Leah Jones of Flora in singles.

In doubles, McKenna Snider and Claire Uhl from Olney and Elise Duke and Jenny Powless from Flora in doubles.

The quaifiers advance to the State Final scheduled for this Thursday through Saturday in the Arlington Heights area.
