Bulldogs Claim Chargers Tennis Invitational Title

CHAMPAIGN -- Effingham St. Anthony High School clamed the championship of the Champaign Charger Tennis Doubles Invitational during the weekend.

The Bulldogs scored 20 points for the championship followed by Maroa Forsyth and Dunlap tied for second with 16, Danville fourth with 11.5 followed by Central 7, Bloomington Central Catholic 5, Centennial 2.5 and St. Thomas More 0.

St. Anthony's Anna Greene and Julia Schultz won the No. 3 doubles title. The pair defeated Giulia Bedlini-Kaitlynn Ballard of St. Thomas More 8-0 then downed Danville's Maya Towne and Lexi Foley 0-6, 7-6 (4), 10-7 to move into the title contest. Greene and Schultz won the title over Dunlap's Rachel Mies and Sarah Syed 6-1, 6-4.

The Bulldogs' Mia Kinkelaar and Ellie Link finished second in the No. 1 doubles. The pair won over Centennial's Rachel Hartmann and Allison Hemming 8-0. They defeated Dunlap's Carolina Gusos/Isabelle Gusso, 6-3, 6-0. But the pair fell in the championship match to Danville's Reese Rundle and Anna Houpt in a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 battle.

Liz Hoene and Nora Trupiano took second in the No.2  doubles. The pair blanked St. Thomas More's Lauren Waldorff and Lydia Case, 8-0 then downed Central's Sophia Kalantzis-Cope and Avi Avrutin 8-6. St. Anthony, then fell to Maroa Forsyth's Ella Sandgren and Isabella Griffith, 6-4, 7-5 to finish second.

In the No. 4 doubles, St. Anthony's Gabi Kabbes and Ivy Daiber finished third. The pair handed Centennial's Krisha Patel and Alivia Hooper an 8-0 loss. The Bulldogs pair then lost to Maroa Forsyth's Riley Kaekleman and Pearl Ghotra 6-0, 2-6, 10-5. That dropped the duo into the third place contest where they won over Bloomington Central Catholic's Kate Allen and Molly Bordeick, 8-4.
