Bulldogs Capture Second At SHG Central Illinois Tennis Tourney

SPRINGFIELD -- Effingham St. Anthony captured second place at the Sprnigfield Sacred Heart Griffin Tennis Invitational Saturday.

Sacred Heart Griffin won with 29.5 points followed by St. Anthony 25, Niles North 24, Alton 22, Maroa-Forsyth 20, Greenville/Alton2 17.5, Quincy Notre Dame 17, Rochester 16, Bloomimgton Central Catholic 15.5, Normal University 14.5, Jacksonville 10, Chatham Glenwood 9, Lincoln/St. Anthony2/Sacred Heart3 4, Niles North 2, Rochester 2 and Sacred Heart Griffin 2.

St. Anthony's Mia Kinkelaar and Ella Link were champions the No. 1 doubles. The pair won their opener 8-1 over a GHS duo. The pair then downed a team from Maroa-Forsyth, 5-4. Kinkelaar and Links beat a Niles North duo in a hard-fought 7-6 (0), 8-2, 1-0 (4) victory. That pushed them into the championship match against a team from Bloomington Central Catholic and they won 6-1, 6-2.

In No. 2 doubles, the Bulldogs again were champions. Liz Hoene and Nora Trupiano won their opener 8-1 over a pair from Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin. They defeated a duo from Maroa-Forsyth, 8-5. Hoene and Trupiano then downed a Quincy Notre Dame pair, 6-4, 6-1. In the championship match, they defeated an Alton duo, 7-5, 8-0.

In the No. 3 doubles spot, Gabby Kabbes and Julia Schultz fell in their opener to a Niles North pair, 8-4. The pair won over a Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin duo, 8-1 before falling in the consolation round to a pair from Alton, 8-3.

In the No. 1 singles spot, St. Anthonys' Emily Kowalke finished fourth. Kowalke won her opener over Ari El-Amin (GHS), 8-0. Kowalke then downed Griffin's MK Christie, 8-1. Kowalke fell to Rochester's Julie Musgrave 7-6 (3), 7-5.

She dropped into the third place match and lost to Maroa-Forsyth's Ella Sangren, no score listed.

In the No. 2 singles, Anna Greene lost her opener against Quincy Notre Dame's Alyssa Ley, 8-3. She then claimed a victory over Sacred Heart Griffin's Hadley Sommer-Watts, 8-0. She exited the tourney with a loss to Marla Knepler (GHS), 8-4.
