Bulldogs Compete at Bloomington Tennis Tourney

BLOOMINGTON -- Effingham St. Anthony competed in the Bloomington Purple Tennis Tournament during the weekend.

Laura Schmidt and Liv Hoene captured second place at the No. 2 doubles.

The pair defeated Moser/Hudson (Peoria Richwoods), 6-2, 6-1; won over Williams-Vanderlaan (Downers Grove South), 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 and Saxsman-Carter (Morton), 6-2, 6-3 before losing to Hotsimpler-Towne (Danville), 6-2, 6-0 to take second.

Emily Kowalke finshed fourth at No. 1 singles. Kowalke defeated Rhea Kumer (Normal Community), 6-1, 6-1 and Morgan Keefe (Belleville West), 6-1, 6-1. She then fell to Brooklyn Behrens (Danville), 6-0, 6-0 and Julia Wojtowicz (Peoria Richwoods), 6-1, 7-5.

Madelyn Brown and Annie Strullmyer finished tied for fifth at No. 3 doubles.

The pair won over Husarik-Thomas (Normal West), 1-0 default then lost to Gusso-Humbles (Dunlap), 6-4, 6-3 before beating Hernandez-Setzler (Bloomington), 6-0, 6-2 and Chareye-Kim (Champaign Central), 6-3, 7-5.

Anna Greene competed at No. 2 singles and fell to Holly Turnbull (Bloomington), 6-3, 6-1 and Chloe Ploughing (Alton), 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles, Mia Kinkelaar and Ellie LInk lost to O'Gorman-Wilhund (Champaign Central), 6-3, 5-7, 10-1 and then defeated Knepp-Kottabi (Morton), 6-4, 7-5. They fell to Eiskami-Tieman (Belleville West), 7-6(1), 6-4.

"This was a good, competitive tournament," said St. Anthony Coach Darlene Esker.
