Bulldogs Take Second At SHG Central Illinois Tennis Invitational

SPRINGFIELD -- Effingham St. Anthony finished second in the Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Central Illinois Tennis Invitational during the weekend.

Greenville was the team champion with 33 points followed by St. Anthony 30, Sacred Heart-Griffin 29, Quincy Notre Dame 26, Niles North 22, Alton 18, Chatham Glenwood 17, Maroa-Forsyth 11, Bloomington Central Catholic 10, Jacksonville 8, Rochester 8, Chatham Glenwood 2 5, Rochester 2 4, Lincoln 3, Niles North 2 3, SHG2/BCC2/G2 1.

Emily Kowalke was the No. 1 singles for St. Anthony. Kowalke won over Lincoln's Maria Van, 6-0, 6-1 then downed Chatham Glenwood's Ellie Surges, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (6) then won over Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin's Caroline Sheehan, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(6) and played for the championship finishing second after falling to Niles North's Sobia Shethwala, 6-1, 6-1.

Liv Hoene competed at the No. 2 singles spot, winning over Bloomington Central Catholic's Ava Rohrig, 6-2, 6-2 then downed Rochester's Abbie Cochran, 6-1, 6-0. Hoene defeated Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin's Maddie McKay, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (5). She fell to Evie Johnson of Greenville, 6-2, 6-1 to finish second.

In the No. 3 singles spot, Laura Schmidt competed for the Bulldogs and won over Cerro Gordo's Odette Yobal-Dominguez, 6-3, 6-3 then won over Niles North's Ishani  Amin, 6-0, 6-0. Schmidt downed Quincy Notre Dame's Paige Bliven, 6-0, 6-0. Schmidt then defeated Greenville's Cora Miller, 6-0, 6-0.

In the No. 1 doubles, Ellie Link and Mia Kinkelaar defeated a pair from Alton, 7-6(5), 6-0, 1-0 (8) then fell to a duo from Quincy Notre Dame, 6-3, 6-0. That dropped the pair into the consolation bracket where they won over a Cerro Gordo pair, 8-2, then beat a duo from Niles North, 8-1 before tying for fifth place.

In No. 2 doubles, Madelyn Brown and Annie Strullmyer won over a Rochester pair, 6-0, 6-0 but fell to a duo from Cerro Gordo, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10). That dropped them into the consolation bracket where they defeated a Maroa-Forsyth duo, 8-5 then felll to a Quincy Notre Dame pair, 9-8 (3).
