Novak Djokovic announced Thursday that he won’t be playing in the U.S. Open, which begins next week, since he remains unvaccinated against Covid-19, and vaccination is required for foreigners to enter the U.S.

Meanwhile, the draw revealed hours later that Serena Williams’ first-round opponent in what is expected to be the last tournament of her career will be unseeded Danka Kovinic. Williams recently announced she was readying to retire, and suggested, but didn’t explicitly say, the U.S. Open would be her last tournament.
