St. Anthony Wins Tennis Sectional Title

Effingham St. Anthony won the Centralia Tennis Sectional. Members of the team are, left to right, Evan Mossman, Aiden Tegeler, Roberto Valdes, Henry Kemme, Matt Herzing and Manaye Mossman.

Effingham St. Anthony High School claimed the championship of the Centralia Tennis Sectional during the weekend.

The Bulldogs scored 20 points to edge second-place Mascoutah with 19 followed by Newton 15, Effingham 14, Teutopolis 14, Mattoon 12, Robinson 6, Casey-Westfield 4, Centralia 4 and Salem 0.

St. Anthony will have a singles player and a doubles team advancing to the State Tournament. The top four in singles and in doubles advance.

Manye Mossman, a freshman, placed second in singles action to advance. Also advancing for the Bulldogs were  Aiden Tegeler, a junior, and senior Henry Kemme in douibles.

Mossman defeated Will Pullen (Mattoon), 6-1, 6-0 then downed Effingham's Blayne Pals, 6-0, 6-1. Mossman won over Wyatt Jurgensmeyer of Mascoutah, 6-4, 6-0 before falling to champion Thad Dillow of Effingham, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0. Ret.

Dillow, a junior, advanced as the singles champion. He defeated Mick Porter of Mattoon, 6-0, 6-0 then won over Mascoutah's Nathan Gettinger, 6-1, 6-0. He downed Newton's Ben Street, 6-3, 6-0 before winning over St. Anthony's M. Mossman.

Also advancing in singles was Newton's Street. Street defeated T-town's Carter Davidson, 6-0, 6-0 then won over St. Anthony's Evan Mossman, 6-0, 6-1. He fell to Effingham's Dillow before winning over Jurgensmeyer of Mascoutah, 4-2, Ret.

Jurgensmeyer, also advanced.

In doubles play, Mattoon's Tejas Zala and Ethan Baheny were the champions. St. Anthony's Tegeler and Kemme placed second and defeated Mattoon's Easton-Donaldson, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 then won over Centralia's Milburn-Martin, 6-0, 6-3. They beat Mascoutah's Beck-Norrenberns, 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-3 before losing to the eventual champions, 6-4, 6-2.

T-town's Kolten Tabbert and Ethan Thoele finished fourth to advance. They won over Mascoutah's Homer/Knedel, 6-2, 6-1 and over Newton's Romito/Weber, 6-1, 7-5 before falling to Mattoon's Zala'Bahenry, 6-3, 6-2 then losing to Mascoutah's Beck/Nohrrenberns, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Also advancing were third place finishers Tommy Beck and Sam Norrenberns of Mascoutah.

The State Tournament is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, May 26-28 with the host Hersey High School and tournament central at Arlington Heights.
