Mount Zion Claims Apollo Tennis Tourney, EHS Fourth

Mount Zion High School won the championship of the Apollo Conference Tennis Tournament during weekend action.

The Braves scored 59 points followed by Mattoon 43, Charleston 36, Effingham 33, Lincoln 14 and Mahomet-Seymour 13.

Effingham's Thad Dillow won the No. 1 singles championship. Dillow had a first round bye then defeated Dinaso of Charleston and downed Mount Zion's Fehrenbacher in the championship match.

Dinaso was a winner over Mattoon's Zala for third place.

Mount Zion's Gower was the champion of the No. 2 singles. Effingham's Blayne Pals opened with a win over Lincoln's Stuckey then fell to Gower. Pals dropped into the third place match and finished fourth, losing to Charleston's Pschirrer.

Tyler Nohren picked up a victory at the No. 3 singles spot for the Hearts. He then fell to the eventual champion, Mount Zion's Shade. Nohren dropped into the third place match and lost to Mattoon's Eastin.

Mount Zion's Renfro won the No. 4 singles title. Effingham's Preston Siner won over Lincoln's Freitag then fell to Renfro in the next round. Siner dropped into the third place match and finished fourth with a loss to Charleston's King.

Griffith of Mount Zion was the champion of the No. 5 singles.

Effingham's Evan Pryor won his opening match over Lincoln's Stuckey then fell to Griffith. He dropped into the third place match and lost to Mattoon's Pullen.

Mount Zion's Walker was the champion at No. 6 singles.

Effingham's Ross Schaefer won his opener then lost to Mattoon's Porter. He fell into the third place match and won over Charleston's Kaurin for third place.

In the No. 1 doubles, Mattoon's Zala and Bahney were the champions.

Effingham's Dillow/Pals won their opener then fell to Zala and Bahney. That dropped the pair into the third place match where they lost to Charleston's Dinaso/Pschirrer.

The Braves' Fehrenbacher/Gower were the champions at the No. 2 doubles.

Effingham's Nohren and Siner won their opening match before falling to the eventual champions. They then competed for third place and won over Charleston's Fifield/King.

Mount Zion also won the No. 3 doubles as Renfro and Walker combined.

Effingham's Pryor and Schafer won their opener before dropping the next round to a Charleston duo. They fell into the third place contest and lost to Mattoon's Pullen and Porter to finish fourth.

Named to the All-Conference tennis team were Effingham's Thad Dillow, Charleston's Vince Dinaso, Braden Pschirrer and Trent King; Mattoon's Tejas Zala and Ethan Bahney and Mount Zion's Lane Fehrenbacher, Riley Gower and Will Shade.
