The world's top-ranked women's tennis player, Australia's Ash Barty, said Thursday she'll be skipping the U.S. Open, which will be the sport's first major since January, because she feels it's too risky to travel for it.

The 24-year-old is the highest-profile player so far to opt out of the U.S. Open, which will begin on August 31 in Queens, New York.
