EDWARDSVILLE -- Teutopolis High School won the Edwardsville Tennis Invitational-Heather Bradshaw Memorial in their flight during the weekend while Effingham finished with a 1-2 record.
T-town defeated Triad, 6-3 in the first round. The Wooden Shoes then edged Dunlap 5-4 in the semifinal. In the championship, T-town was an 8-1 winner over Highland.
"Instead of brackets for each individual singles player or doubles team like our previous tournaments so far this year, this tournament is a team tournament in which the final score of a dual meet decides who advances to the next round,' said T-town Coach Allison Vogt. "Our team won the tournament in our filght (Challenges I). It was a great weekend of some well-played tennis."
In the first round for Effingham, the Hearts dropped a 5-4 decision to Benton. The Hearts then lost to The Principia, 5-4. EHS finished out with an 8-1 victory over Mascoutah.
"Our team is half returning players and half first year varsity," said EHS Coach Erik Williamson. "They all showed grit and heart in some very long competitive matches. The final place of seventh does not show how well they performed and matured from match to match.
"Every singles player had at least one win with eight of them goimg into a tie-breaker for the third set. When the team fell behind in the total match score, the doubles teams picked it up. We have all new doubles pariings this yera."
