St. A, EHS, T-town, Newton Tennis Players Do Well At State

Effingham St. Anthony, Effingham and Teutopolis tennis players did well at the Class 1A State Tennis Tournament during the weekend.
The Bulldogs captured eighth place as a team with 12 points.
Emilee Mossman competed in singles play and won three straight matches before suffering two losses to exit the tourney field.
Mossman, a junior, won her first, second and third rounds Thursday and Friday. She downed Kate Feldmann of Highland, 6-0, 6-0 before beating Natalia Tabor of Ottawa Township, 6-0, 6-0. She then won over Fiola Rivas of Chicago Lake View, 6-3, 6-1.
Mossman then suffered her first loss to Claudia Miller of Winnetka North Shore Country Day, 6-3, 6-0. That dropped her into the consolation quartersfinals where she fell to Mia Bertino of Joliet Catholic Academy, 8-1.
Allison Kowalke, a sophomore and junior Averee Greene went into the consolation quarterfinals in doubles play.
The pair won over Grace Horky and Maggie O'Brien of Lemont, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Kyrsten Darrough and Gracy Himelick of Flora, 6-1, 6-1 in Thursday play. They fell to Emily Sun and Isabella Kellemeier of Chicago University, 6-2, 6-3 in the third round dropping them into consolation paly.
In the fourth round of consolation, the Bulldog duo beat Mollie Morrisey and Josi Schmedeke of Rochester, 7-5, 6-2 and won over Grace Horky and Maggie O'Brien of Lemont, 8-3. They then fell out of the tournament in the consolation quarterfinals to Livia Hamm and Ellie Howland of West Chicago Wheaton Academy, 8-2.
T-town had a single and two doubles players competing. The Wooden Shoes finished in a 14th place tie with Wheaton St. Francis.
Diana Mossman finished in the 17-24th place. Mossman, a junior, lost her first match of the tourney to Mia Bertino of Joliet Catholic Academy, 6-0, 6-0 but came roaring back with three straight victories. She downed Avery Meyer of Sterlng Newman Central Catholic, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-6 then beat Clair Moore of Quincy Notre Dame 6-2, 6-4.
She downed Claudia Bilkey of Vernon Hills in the third round of consolation, 6-1, 6-4. She dropped her second match against Madelyn Jurasek of Maple Park Kaneland, 8-5 in the fourth round of consolation.
Alli Brumleve and Macy Probst finished with 9-12th place finish. The pair opened with two wins Thursday over Makynna Shaffer and Marrie Blankenberg of Carmi-White County, 6-3, 6-1 then won over Logan Kauble and Riley Doll of Olney, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0. The pair dropped their first match against Sophie Ishiwari and Isabel Kapustka of Chicago Payton, 6-3, 6-2.
That dropped them into the fourth consolation round where they beat Sydney O'Donnell and Grace Couri of Peoria Notre Dame, 6-1, 7-6(3) and Jaddy Jacobs and Sydney Schott of Sterling Newman Central Catholic, 8-4. They fell in the fifth round of consolation to Emily Sun and Isabella Kellemeier of Chicago University, 8-2.
Nicole Deters and Julia Hardiek lost their first two rounds on Thursday against Jackie Brown and Ananya Asthana of Chicago University, 6-2, 6-4 and Kylie Jozwik and Melissa Variny of Lake Villa Lakes, 6-1, 6-2.
"These results are the best in school history," said T-town Coach Kaye Kimpling.
Effingham's Chloe Funneman and Lauryn Douthit, both seniors, won their first two rounds Thursday, beating Marisa Patel-O'Connor and Arohi Singh of Aurora Illinois Math and Science Academy, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 and Kaitlyn Young and Makinley Tonn of Benton, 6-2, 6-1.
In the third round, the pair fell to Annabel Edwards and Elaine Sarazen of Chicago Latin, 6-1, 6-1. That dropped them into the fourth round consolation where they lost to Hannah Riegle and Medha Venigalla of Chatham Glenwood, 6-4, 6-0 to exit the tourney.
Newton's Jacelyn Street, a junior, won her opening match against Ella Marvel of Ottawa Township, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 then fell to Maria Rivas of Chicago Lake View in Thursday play, 3-6 6-0, 6-2. She then dropped into the second consolation round where she beat Brooke Akrami of Palos Heights Chicago Christian, 6-0, 6-1. In the third consolation round, she won over Kelsie Ayers of Bloomington, 6-1, 6-1. She exited the tournament in the fourth round of consolation with a loss to Lily Schoecker of Rock Island Alleman, 6-4, 6-3.
