Monday at the U.S. Open, Simona Halep became the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in first round of the event in the professional era as she was beaten by 44th-ranked Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.

Meanwhile, Serena and Venus Williams, defending champion Sloane Stephens, Kevin Anderson, Andy Murray and 2016 champ Stan Wawrinka all advanced.
