Members of the Teutopolis High School tennis team heading to state are, left to right, Alex Probst, Seth Probst, Kyele Mossman, Coach Michael Vogt, Logan Waldhoff and Alex Deters.

Teutopolis High School took second place at the Effingham Tennis Sectional Saturday and will be sending a singles player and two doubles players to state.

Olney won the sectional with 24 points followed by T-town 23, Mattoon 16, Flora 15, Effingham 8, Robinson 8, Charleston 8, Newton 6, Effingham St. Anthony 2 and Casey-Westfield 0.

Kyele Mossman captured first place in singles with an opening round bye, then a win over Hunt from Casey-Westfield, 6-0, 6-0, a win over Donsbach from Effingham, 6-1, 6-0, a win over Flora's Beckham, 6-0, 6-1 and the championship match win over Pajonk of Olney, 6-0, 6-1.

"Kyele has been playing really well all season and it really showed this past weekend," said T-town Coach Michael Vogt. "He is such a talented player but is equally as smart in the way he attacks the game. I'm very excited to get to see him compete against some of the best players in the state next weekend."

Alex Probst and Seth Probst were third place finishers in doubles play. The pair had a first round bye then won over Woodard/Ochs of Newton and McDowell/Taylor of Olney, 6-2, 6-1. The pair fell to Mattoon's Bergstrom/Comstock, 6-3, 6-4 before winning over their own teammates Logan Waldhoff and Alex Deters, 6-3, 6-4 for third place.

"Alex and Seth just started playing doubles together about two weeks prior to sectionals and it is really impressive to see how much they've improved as a team during that time," said Vogt. "Alex has been one four leaders all year as a senior and Seth is one of our most improved players this year."

Waldhoff and Deters had an opening round bye then downed Sumtrup/Greenwood of Flora, 6-3, 6-4. They won over Gowin/Will of Charleston, 6-3, 7-5. Then fell to Hendrickson/Bettis of Olney, 6-3, 6-4 before dropping the third place match to their teammates.

"Logan and Alex are a team that I think flew under the radar all year," said Vogt. "You don't see many No. 2 doubles teams in the area that are this strong. They are both very passionate and competitive guys and have been a lot of fun to coach. They complement each other very well and have the potential to do some really good things up at State."

The State Tournament will be held Thursday through Saturday around the Chicago area.
