Bulldogs Win Tennis Sectional

A number of area girls are headed to this week's State Girls Tennis Tournament.

St. Anthony Sophomore Emilee Mossman won the sectional singles championship, defeating Newton sophomore Jacelyn Street 6-1, 6-0. Casey-Westfield senior Elizabeth Eckerty defeated Teutopolis junior Julia Hardiek 7-5, 6-1 for third place. All four girls are headed for State, though.

St. Anthony freshman Allison Kowalke and senior Claire Wortman defeated Teutopolis senior Lauren Hemmen and sophomore Alli Brumleve 6-1, 6-3 for the sectional doubles championship. Effingham High School junior Chloe Funneman and junior Lauryn Douthit won over Newton senior Sydney Zumbahlen and senior Lesley Woods 6-1, 6-1 in the third place match. All four doubles teams go to State.

State Tournament action begins Thursday throughout the Chicagoland area.

St. Anthony won the sectional championship with 28 points. Teutopolis and Newton tied for second with 18 points apiece. Casey-Westfield finished fourth with 15 points and Effingham was fifth with seven points. Mattoon and Charleston tied for sixth with six points each, Paris was eighth with four points, Shelbyville was ninth with two points, and Robinson also competed and finished 10th.
