Newton Beats St. A, EHS Wins In Tennis Competition

NEWTON -- Newton High School claimed a 4-3 win over Effingham St. Anthony in boys tennis competition Tuesday.

The Bulldogs picked up the top singles win as Andy Saba went 6-4, 6-2 over his opponent. Newton then took the No. 2 spot when Holden Koerner won 6-0, 6-3.

The Bulldogs picked up two more points at No. 3  and No. 4 when Augustus Heal won 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 and Nick Goeckner went out 6-3, 6-2. But Newton tied the score when Dylan Ochs won 7-6, 7-4, 6-1 and Zach Dust blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Only one doubles was contested and Newton's Sam Hamrich and Brett Woodard won 6-0, 6-1 to provide the Eagles with the team victory.

At Newton

No. 1 -- Andy Saba (SA) defeated Ethan Carter (N), 6-4, 6-2

No. 2 -- Holden Koerner (N) defeated Ryan Kruger (SA), 6-0, 6-3

No. 3 -- Augustus Heal (SA) defeated Zach Huschle (N), 4-6, 6-2, 10-5

No. 4 -- Nick Goeckner (SA) defeated Faron Bartens (N), 6-3, 6-2

No. 5 -- Dylan Ochs (N) defeated Michael Kaldas (SA), 7-6, 7-4, 6-1

No. 6 -- Zach Dust (N) defeated Jackson Willenborg (SA), 6-0, 6-0

Doubles

No. 1 -- Sam Hamrich-Brett Woodard (N) defeated Will Kabbes-Ben Rudolphi (SA), 6-0, 6-1

 

At Effingham

Effingham High School blanked Shelbyville 9-0 in tennis competition Tuesday.

Alessandro Boca tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Matt Linders claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. Nick Katz won 6-2, 6-1 and Nate Linders went 6-4, 6-4 in the middle spots. Nick Beck downed his opponent 7-5, 6-1 and Brennan Barr tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win.

In doubles play,  Ben Donsbach and Parker Siner won 6-2, 6-2, M. Linders and Katz won 6-4, 6-4 and N. Linders and Beck won 6-0, 6-1.

The Hearts evened their record at 5-5.
