Donsbach, Siner Claim Doubles Title At Apollo

Ben Donsbach (left) and Parker Siner captured the No. 3 doubles Apollo Conference championship.
Effingham High School's Ben Donsbach and Parker Siner claimed the No. 3 doubles championship in the Apollo Conference Tennis Tournament Frday and Saturday.
The pair played Jones and Mathis from Mattoon and won 6-3, 7-5. The pair then took on Mount Zion's Walker and Beavers for the championship and won 6-3, 6-1.
Mount Zion won the team championship with 61 points followed by Effingham 36, Mattoon 35, Charleston 29 and Salem 28.
In the No. 1 singles, Alessandro Boca defeated Louis Meekers of Salem, 6-1, 6-4 then fell to Andy Hinch of Mount Zion 6-2, 6-0. That dropped Boca into the third place match where he fell to Mattoon's Quinn Camfield 6-0, 6-2 to finish fourth.
In the No. 2 singles, Matt Linders lost the opening match to Salem's Kyle Allen 6-1, 6-4. He received a bye in the consolation tourney and then finished with the consolation championship with a bye.
The No. 3 singles spot, Effingham's Nick Katz finished fourth. Katz had a first round bye then lost to Salem's Levi Cannon 6-2, 6-2 before dropping the third place match to Mattoon's Lance Warfel, 6-4, 6-2.
In the No. 4 singles, Efifngham's Nate Linders had a first round bye then fell to Mattoon's Reese Jones 6-3, 6-4. That dropped Linders into the third place match against Salem's Eric Brubaker who then won 6-3, 6-3.
Siner competed in the No. 5 singles and had a first round bye then defeated Mattoon's Caleb Borntreger 7-5, 6-1 to move into the title contest. Siner fell to Mount Zion's Tristan Balgemann 6-1, 6-2 to finish second.
The No. 6 singles, Donsbach had a first round bye then downed Charleston's Sam Jackson 6-1, 6-1 to enter the championship match. Donsbach fell to Mount Zion's Peter Brandon 6-1, 6-1 to finish second.
In the No. 1 doubles, Linders and Katz teammed up and fell to Salem's Allen/Cannon, 6-2, 6-2. They ended up with two byes to finish as the consolation champions..
The No. 2 doubles, Effingham's Boca and Linder combined to beat Mattoon's Warfel/Comstock, 6-1, 6-3 then fell in the title match to Mount Zion's Demirjiam/Velasco, 6-1, 6-0 to take second.
Catholic Schools Tournament
Efifngham St. Anthony competed in the Catholic Schools Tournament.
Kabbes and Kaldas beat Vanderbaugh and Altward to advance in the No. 3 doubles consolation tourney, 6-2, 7-5. The pair then fell to Alton's Walters, St. John, 6-0, 6-2. They dropped into a match against a Quincy duo and lost 6-4, 6-0.
St. Anthony got two points for fourth place.
